Responsibilities

ROLE SUMMARY:

Wetherby Senior School was founded in 2015. There are approximately 450 boys on roll, all of whom study at least one language for 5 years and we regularly add at least 0.5 of a grade Value Added at both IGCSE and A Level. Our students achieve grades that allow them to gain places at top UK universities such as; Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, Durham and UCL and universities aboard such as the University of Chicago, UPenn, Bocconi in Milan and the IE Business School Madrid.
The School was founded to offer a progressive education in the heart of London. The School’s focus on providing an all-round education means that high standards are expected of the boys in all areas of school life. The School provides the boys with a broad educational experience, which includes Philosophy and Thinking Skills in the curriculum, to ensure that they are able to think critically and to problem solve but also to ensure they can be creative and collaborative in their approach, so that they develop a sense of social responsibility and respect for others. Wetherby Senior are now looking for a Head of Maths to join them from September 2025. The Maths Department at Wetherby is made up of eight subject specialists who, between them, have a breadth of experience teaching in similar departments at some of London’s top independent day schools Mathematics is a popular A level choice for our students, and we currently have three classes of A Level Mathematics and at least one class of A Level Further Mathematics in each of Year 12 and Year 13. At GCSE, we sit the IGCSE Edexcel Maths and our best students also take and do well in AQA Level 2 Further Mathematics.
As Head of Maths at Wetherby Senior you will have the opportunity to lead a team of specialists and to develop the teaching of Maths in interesting and innovative ways. The post would suit an existing Head of Department or an ambitious Teacher looking to move into a management role and with a track-record of leadership. Teaching staff at Wetherby Senior School have experience of teaching in both the maintained and independent sectors and colleagues looking to move into independent education are warmly encouraged to apply.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and review of the Maths curriculum, ensuring engaging and effective schemes of work are in place across all year groups.
  • Establish high standards of teaching through effective assessment strategies, data analysis, and continuous review of pupil progress.
  • Foster a culture of academic curiosity and a love of Maths through inspirational leadership and subject enrichment opportunities.
  • Stay informed of developments in Maths education and share relevant updates with the department to enhance practice.
  • Support and develop staff through effective induction, lesson observations, feedback, and ongoing professional development.
  • Promote consistent behaviour management and ensure staff make appropriate use of the School’s rewards and sanctions.
  • Oversee the support for pupils with additional needs, ensuring all students are known, understood, and appropriately challenged.
  • Monitor and improve the quality of teaching and learning through regular scrutiny of pupil work, reports, and tracking systems.
  • Provide guidance to pupils on subject choices and support university applications, including Oxbridge and international pathways.
  • Oversee departmental operations such as budget management, resource allocation, textbook administration, and classroom maintenance.
  • Organise and lead Maths enrichment, trips, competitions, and contribute to whole-school initiatives, meetings, and the school’s digital presence.
