Job Description
The Global Head of R&D Seeds Operations is responsible for the core processes and logistics activities that drive every successful breeding program while overseeing a network of research stations across diverse geographies. This role is responsible for optimizing R&D processes, seed production and seed movement of all product development stages, ensuring efficient resource allocation and accelerating time-to-market for new vegetables varieties.
The leader will spearhead the implementation of breeding technologies, automation, and digitalization of R&D operations to ensure on-time seed delivery with the desired quality and quantity. The role will also develop strategies to improve cross-functional collaboration, streamline regulatory compliance processes, and foster a culture of innovation across the global R&D network. This role is crucial in transforming Syngenta’s R&D into a highly efficient, data-driven, and globally integrated organization, ensuring the company’s continued leadership in the market.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Strategic Leadership - Develop and execute a global strategy for R&D Seeds Operations aligned with Syngenta’s overall business objectives. Drive innovation and continuous improvement in breeding processes and technologies.
  • Oversee the global network of research stations, ensuring optimal resource allocation and performance. Standardize operational procedures across stations while accommodating regional specificities.
  • Streamline R&D processes and implement best practices to accelerate time-to-market for new seed varieties. Ensure timely delivery of high-quality seeds for trials and development programs.
  • Lead the adoption of advanced breeding technologies, automation, and digital solutions. Drive the digitalization of R&D operations to enhance efficiency and decision-making.
  • Foster strong partnerships with other departments (e.g., GD Heads, Trialing and Placement, etc). Facilitate knowledge sharing and synergies across the global R&D network.
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant regulatory and HSE requirements in R&D operations.
  • Resource Management - Optimize allocation of human, financial, and material resources across R&D operations. Develop and mentor talent within the R&D Seeds Operations team.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for R&D Seeds Operation. Regularly assess and report on operational performance, implementing improvements as needed.
  • Cultivate an environment that encourages creativity, calculated risk-taking, and innovation. Promote knowledge sharing and best practice adoption across the global R&D network.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Plant Science, Agronomy, Genetics, or related field.
  • 15+ years in the agricultural/biotechnology industry, with 8+ years in senior leadership roles Strategic planning and execution in R&D contexts.
  • Proficient knowledge in agronomy, plant breeding, logistics, operations, automation, seed physiology, modelling, and planning tools.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles
  • Proven track record of developing and executing global R&D strategies
  • Experience organization transformation and change management principles.
  • Leadership in multinational environments: Experience leading cross-functional and geographically dispersed teams in a global agricultural or seed company.
  • Stakeholder management: Track record of effectively engaging with diverse stakeholders, including senior management, researchers, growers, and external partners.
  • Ability to think and plan strategically. and manage organizational change.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop dashboards to report progress against metrics and KPIs.
  • Ability to estimate financial impacts and plan scenarios.
