Head of SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality)
Location: Rugby – travel across clients sites in the North of the UK
Salary: £50,000 - £90,000 + car allowance
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent – 40 hours per week
Are you an experienced SHEQ leader with a passion for driving safety culture and environmental excellence? We’re looking for a dynamic and strategic Head of SHEQ to join our clients senior leadership team and lead their health, safety, and environmental initiatives across all operations.
About the Role:
As Head of SHEQ, you will be responsible for developing and managing the company’s SHEQ strategy, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, and promoting a proactive safety culture. You’ll lead a dedicated team and work closely with site managers and external partners to reduce risks, drive performance, and support sustainable operations.
Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop, implement, and monitor the SHEQ strategy across all sites.
  • Lead the SHEQ team, offering clear direction, mentorship, and support.
  • Drive continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental standards.

Compliance & Regulation

  • Ensure full compliance with UK health, safety, and environmental legislation.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and advise senior management accordingly.
  • Oversee environmental compliance, including waste management and permitting.

Risk Management

  • Conduct detailed risk assessments and implement effective control measures.
  • Lead investigations into incidents and near misses, producing action plans.
  • Maintain accurate safety records, including audits and training logs.

Training & Development

  • Design and deliver training programmes to promote a strong safety culture.
  • Mentor managers and staff in best practices for health and safety.
  • Encourage continuous improvement and accountability at all levels.

Performance Monitoring

  • Set and track KPIs for SHEQ performance.
  • Produce regular reports for the board on safety metrics, incidents, and improvements.
  • Lead inspections and audits to ensure compliance and identify areas for development.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with regulatory bodies such as the HSE and Environment Agency.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, contractors, and partners to foster a safe work environment.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Chartered Membership of IOSH (or working towards).
  • Senior-level experience in SHEQ, ideally within waste management or environmental services.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Proven leadership and team management experience across multiple sites.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills.
  • Proactive mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.

Desirable:

  • Experience with ISO 45001 or similar systems.
  • Environmental management qualification (e.g., IEMA).
