HEAD OF STATISTICS (VARIETY EVALUATION) – LEAD THE FUTURE OF AGRICULTURAL DATA SCIENCE

Location: Niab, Cambridge, CB24 9NZ
Salary: £42,336 - £51,300 per annum (dependent on experience)

Contract: Permanent, full-time (37 hours per week, Monday–Friday) – Part-time options available (minimum 30 hours per week)

Niab is seeking an experienced statistical expert to take on a senior leadership role in variety evaluation. This is a unique opportunity to lead a specialist team, develop cutting-edge statistical methodologies, and play a key role in shaping agricultural research, policy, and industry decision-making.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • A statistical expert – Degree in statistics or a similar analytical field.
  • Technically skilled – Proficiency in GenStat, R, and Microsoft Office 365.
  • A strategic thinker – Ability to translate complex data into meaningful insights.
  • A confident communicator – Skilled at presenting findings to policymakers, industry leaders, and research bodies.
  • A collaborative leader – Experience working in practical data analysis for academia or industry.
    Desirable: A postgraduate qualification, experience in agricultural crop analysis, and knowledge of UK plant testing systems.
Responsibilities
  • Ensuring the integrity and excellence of crop trial data analysis.
  • Managing high-profile projects with APHA, Defra, BSPB, and other key stakeholders.
  • Driving innovation in statistical methodologies to improve crop variety assessment.
  • Engaging with policymakers, researchers, and industry professionals to present findings and insights.
  • Contributing to the strategic direction of Niab’s variety evaluation and statistical analysis.
    This role has become available due to the planned retirement of the current postholder, ensuring a smooth transition with full support and mentorship.
