THE ROLE

Pembroke College wishes to appoint a new Head of Student
Wellbeing to lead the College’s strategy for and delivery of student
mental health and wellbeing support. The role holder will have
considerable flexibility, in liaison with the Senior Tutor and the
Tutorial team, to build a wellbeing support service which matches
the needs of students in the current landscape of higher education
needs. The Head of Student Wellbeing will act as a dedicated source
of support for students, operating in a space between the academic
mentorship currently offered by undergraduate and postgraduate
Tutors and clinical care.
The College provides support to students through the tutorial
system led by the Senior Tutor. Tutors are supported by a wider
pastoral team. All students are assigned a tutor to provide support
on both practical and personal issues. Students may also consult a
tutor other than their assigned tutor if they wish. The pastoral team
includes the College Nurse, a College Counsellor, the Chaplain, and
the Tutorial Office staff. The College also uses a wide range of
counsellors on an ad hoc basis and this will be co-ordinated by the
Head of Student Wellbeing and the College Counsellor. Pembroke
College is seeking to appoint to a new role of ‘Head of Student
Wellbeing’ to strengthen student resilience and physical and mental
wellbeing, bringing together current good practices and developing
new initiatives to provide effective student support.
This is an exciting opportunity to build a bespoke support service for
our community of some 800 students. The Head of Wellbeing will
have considerable scope, in liaison with the Senior Tutor, to develop
a wide ranging wellbeing programme that can make a real change in
the lives of Pembroke’s students. The successful candidate will be
supported to undergo professional development training in clinical,
therapeutic, management and leadership skills as appropriate.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

In liaison with the Senior Tutor, to design a Health and Wellbeing
Strategy for the College. To develop new, proactive approaches to
wellbeing support within College focused on pre-emptive work and
resilience training. Leadership, development and co-ordination of
the enrichment, opportunity, wellbeing and personal development
experiences (through music and other arts, crafts, play, sports,
volunteering, life-skills etc).
To provide operational leadership and oversight of pastoral care
delivery for undergraduate and postgraduate students, including
supporting and advising all members of the College’s student
welfare team (including Tutors, the Tutorial Office, Porters, Nurses,
Junior and Graduate Parlour Officers)
To design and implement, in consultation with the Senior Tutor, a
clear pathway of internal referral routes to ensure students are
supported appropriately and in a way which is understood by
students and the College’s pastoral team, this to include reviewing
how out of hours support is delivered.
To lead on case management, liaising with relevant colleagues and
services as appropriate. Subject to appropriate consent, to ensure
relevant members of the College Welfare Team are updated on
cases on a timely basis.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

To have oversight of released ‘Student Support Documents’ (SSDs) to
ensure identified relevant recommendations are actioned and to be
the primary point of liaison with the University Disability Resource
Centre Services.
To develop training with regards to wellbeing and mental health for
students, staff and Fellows as appropriate.
To liaise closely with Tutors through attendance at regular
Undergraduate and Graduate Tutor meetings and through
engagement about individual student cases.
To triage students with wellbeing and mental health needs, both to
University level services and to the support that Pembroke offers
additionally in cases of specific needs.
To offer therapeutic interventions as appropriate for Pembroke
students.
To assist the College pastoral team in response to individual student
risk and crises, including assisting with out-of-hours provision.
To take on the role of College Safeguarding Officer ensuring relevant
policies are in place lead on safeguarding policy and implementation
within College.
To set up a forum to ensure regular consultations with undergraduate
and graduate welfare representatives, the Wellbeing Team and Senior
Tutor to address generic mental health and wellbeing concerns with
which students are currently presenting.
To contribute to the development of a College strategy on supporting
students who have experienced sexual assault and harassment
