Description
Head of Technology Lead the technology that puts a clinically-safe AI health assistant in the hands of 1 million Nigerians and the provider intelligence layer that makes frontline care safer. This is a hybrid role. The Mission 68% of Nigerians get their first point of care from an informal provider who has no clinical tools. AISHA Technologies is changing that, not by replacing the system, but by upgrading it. We are building the primary healthcare infrastructure layer for Africa: a WhatsApp-native AI triage system for patients (AISHA Chat), a clinical decision-support and business management tool for pharmacists and PPMVs (AISHA Pro), and a consultation portal that closes the loop between AI guidance and human care. We launched in September 2025. By March 2026 we had 52,000+ users across 26 Nigerian states. That organic pull tells you something about the problem we are solving. ★ 52,000+ users • 180,000+ triages • 26 Nigerian states • 6 months in First WhatsApp health AI with voice-to-voice in Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Pidgin and English. What You Are Building The AISHA platform is three connected systems that create a closed loop between patients, providers, and the healthcare intelligence layer: AISHA Chat — Patient Access ▸WhatsApp-native AI symptom triage ▸Voice-to-voice in 5 Nigerian languages ▸First-aid guidance & medication safety ▸Human escalation to verified clinicians ▸Follow-up care & health education AISHA Pro — Provider Intelligence ▸AI clinical decision support for PPMVs ▸Nigerian treatment protocol guidance ▸Referral pathways to verified clinics ▸Patient records & inventory management ▸Continuous training via integrated LMS Moreover, beneath both sits the infrastructure layer: sovereign data architecture, NDPR-compliant pipelines, predictive outbreak detection, and medication demand forecasting. This is what you will be building, scaling, and guarding. The Role This is not a maintenance job. There is no legacy system to manage. You are arriving at the beginning and you will shape every architectural decision that matters. As Head of Technology, you are the technical co-pilot of AISHA. You will own the full technology stack — from the WhatsApp API layer handling thousands of concurrent triage sessions, to the RAG pipelines that ground our AI in verified Nigerian clinical guidelines, to the backend infrastructure that makes it all run reliably on low-bandwidth connections across West Africa. You will lead a cross-functional engineering team, work directly with the founders on product and architecture decisions, and hold accountability for our technology roadmap from seed stage to Series A and beyond. What You Will Do 1.Platform Architecture & System Integration Design the unified architecture that makes AISHA Chat, AISHA Pro, the Consultation Portal, and the data infrastructure works as a single intelligent system, not three separate products. ▸Define and own the API contracts, service boundaries, and data flows across all systems ▸Architect the patient ↔ provider ↔ knowledge loop so that a triage in Chat can seamlessly escalate to a consultation, which feeds outcome data back into the AI ▸Ensure every architectural decision considers offline-first behaviour, low- bandwidth resilience, and WhatsApp-scale concurrency ▸Build for a pan-African future- Ghana and Kenya launch in 2029, with more markets to follow 2. AI Systems & Clinical Intelligence Our AI is not a generic chatbot. It is a clinically-governed companion trained on Nigerian treatment guidelines, calibrated for local language and symptom expression, and designed to know its own limits, escalating to a human when it should. ▸Architect and evolve our LLM-powered assistants for both patient-facing triage and provider-facing decision support ▸Build and maintain the RAG pipelines that ground responses in verified clinical knowledge- FMOH guidelines, NAFDAC data, PCN protocols ▸Design agent workflows for guided triage sessions, structured consultations, and adaptive PPMV training ▸Implement and continuously improve health-aware guardrails: hallucination mitigation, escalation triggers, medication safety checks ▸Own the model fine-tuning process- including voice AI for Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Pidgin, and English 3. AISHA Pro- Provider & PPMV Systems AISHA Pro is the B2B product that turns informal pharmacists and PPMVs into a safe, data-connected first point of care. You will build the systems that make that possible. ▸Build the PPMV-facing clinical decision support system with treatment protocol guidance and referral pathways ▸Develop the LMS- adaptive learning paths, AI-powered tutoring, multimedia delivery optimised for mobile-first low-bandwidth contexts, certification and assessment ▸Build the CRM layer: patient interaction tracking, smart follow-ups and reminders, provider dashboards and performance insights ▸Enable PPMVs to make better clinical and business decisions through data they can actually use 4. Consultation Portal & Care Workflows The consultation portal is what happens when AISHA Chat escalates beyond what an AI should handle alone. It needs to feel like a seamless handoff, not a jarring redirect. ▸Design triage-to-consultation workflows that preserve full context across the AI ↔ human boundary ▸Build case tracking, patient history, and follow-up care systems that give providers a complete picture ▸Implement asynchronous consultation flows that work across low-bandwidth and intermittent connectivity 5. Backend, Infrastructure & Data Sovereignty We operate in Nigeria. Our data stays in Nigeria. That is a design constraint, a commercial commitment, and a point of pride. ▸Build scalable backend services that perform under WhatsApp-scale concurrency and traffic spikes ▸Architect locally-hosted infrastructure within Nigeria- NDPR-compliant, end-to-end encrypted, role-based access ▸Build the predictive analytics layer: real-time symptom trend aggregation, early outbreak warning, medication demand forecasting ▸Optimise everything for low-bandwidth environments, this is non-negotiable for the markets we serve 6. Engineering Leadership & Team Building You are not just an architect. You are a builder of builders. You will grow and lead the engineering team that takes AISHA from seed stage to platform at scale. ▸Lead, mentor, and recruit engineers across backend, AI, frontend, and DevOps domains ▸Drive sprint planning, architecture reviews, and delivery cadence ▸Establish engineering culture: testing standards, observability, documentation, and code quality ▸Create an environment where smart engineers can do their best work and grow into senior roles 7. Clinical Safety, Trust & Compliance People trust AISHA with health decisions. That trust is not abstract, it is a clinical and ethical obligation that runs through every line of code. ▸Implement safeguards for AI in healthcare: hallucination detection, confidence thresholds, mandatory escalation paths ▸Ensure full NDPR compliance and data sovereignty across all systems ▸Build for auditability, every AI interaction should be traceable, reviewable, and improvable ▸Work closely with our Medical Director and Clinical Advisors to ensure AI outputs meet clinical governance standards Requirements Essential ▸5+ years of backend engineering experience in Python, Node.js, or equivalent ▸Proven experience designing and shipping distributed systems at scale ▸Hands-on production experience with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini) and RAG architectures ▸Experience with vector databases (Qdrant,Pinecone,Weaviate) and agent frameworks (LangChain, LangGraph) ▸Strong grasp of system design: service boundaries, API contracts, data modelling, async workflows ▸Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams in fast-moving product environments ▸Track record of deploying AI systems to production, not just prototyping Infrastructure & Data ▸Cloud infrastructure: AWS, Azure, or GCP ideally with experience in African cloud deployments ▸Databases: PostgreSQL, Redis, NoSQL (MongoDB or equivalent) ▸DevOps: Docker, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and observability tooling ▸Low-bandwidth and offline-first system design, practical, not theoretical Strongly Valued ▸Experience in healthtech, digital health, or clinical systems ▸Familiarity with WhatsApp Business API, SMS, or USSD integration ▸Understanding of pharmacy or PPMV workflows in African markets ▸Multilingual NLP or voice AI experience, particularly for African languages ▸Experience building LMS or edtech platforms ▸Prior work in regulated environments (data privacy, clinical governance, compliance) Benefits What You Will Find Here You are employee number 2 in the engineering function — arriving early enough to shape everything, late enough that the product is already working and growing. You will not inherit someone else's technical debt. You will not spend your first year refactoring a legacy codebase. You are building from a position of traction. ▸A real problem with real users. 52,000+ people used AISHA with a very low CAC, that is the size of the market pull. ▸Technical challenges worth solving. Voice AI in Hausa. Clinical RAG systems that have to be right. Infrastructure built for WhatsApp-scale on Nigerian bandwidth. These are hard, interesting problems. ▸A seat at the table. You will work directly with the founders. Architecture decisions will be yours. The roadmap will be shaped by you as much as anyone. ▸A mission you can speak to. AISHA is building infrastructure that could meaningfully change healthcare outcomes for millions of people. That is not marketing copy, it is the actual job. ▸Competitive compensation. We will discuss specifics openly in the process. Where We Are Going By the end of 2027, AISHA will be the default health intelligence layer for informal healthcare in Nigeria. By 2029, we will be live in Ghana and Kenya. By 2030, we will have processed over 50 million health interactions and our data will be powering national disease surveillance, pharmaceutical demand forecasting, and population health insights that no one else in this market can provide. The technology you build today will be the foundation that makes all of that possible. The architecture decisions you make in your first six months will still be running when we are at 10 million users. That is the scale of the mandate. We are looking for someone who finds that energising, not daunting. How to Apply Send your CV and a short note, no more than three paragraphs on why this role and why now to: careers@aisha.ng In your note, tell us about a system you have built that you are proud of, not because it was technically clever, but because it actually worked for real users in production. We will respond to every application. We run a three-stage process: an initial conversation with the founding team, a take-home technical scenario and a final conversation on architecture and vision. aisha.ng • Lagos, Nigeria • careers@aisha.ng writer.editor.GO_TO_TOPwriter.editor.GO_TO_BOTTOM
