EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Level 6 (or higher) qualification in Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Manual Handling, Abrasive Wheels, and Working at Heights instructor certification (desirable; training can be provided).
  • Full, clean driving licence.

EXPERIENCE & TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

  • Proven experience in a similar Health & Safety Advisor/Officer role.
  • Strong knowledge of incident reporting and investigation, including experience liaising with the HSA and clients.
  • Experience conducting workplace inspections and developing action plans.
  • Competence in drafting risk assessments, safe systems of work, and method statements.
  • Experience working within a multi-site environment; construction/industrial sector experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with Safe-T-Cert, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 systems (desirable).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

JS McCarthy Ltd is seeking to appoint a dedicated and proactive Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Advisor to support the development and implementation of robust HSE practices across our diverse range of sites and industry sectors.
This role plays a key part in ensuring the business meets and maintains the highest standards of compliance and best practice in line with Safe-T-Cert, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001 accreditations. The successful candidate will work closely with site management teams and external stakeholders to promote and embed a strong, proactive health, safety, and environmental culture across the business.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, maintain, and communicate all health and safety policies, procedures, risk assessments, and safe operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring version control and compliance with current legislation.
  • Support the investigation of accidents, incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences; prepare detailed reports and recommend corrective actions.
  • Conduct and record regular HSE meetings, compiling statistics and identifying trends.
  • Assist with the planning and execution of health, safety, and environmental inspections and audits across all company sites.
  • Lead and support health and safety inductions and internal training programmes for managers and employees.
  • Draft and update site-specific method statements and risk assessments (MSRAs).
  • Coordinate responses to HSE-related queries and advise line management on compliance requirements.
  • Promote awareness through safety campaigns, toolbox talks, and internal communication initiatives.
  • Keep up to date with relevant legislation, industry standards, and emerging best practices, advising management accordingly.
  • Support the maintenance and continuous improvement of the company’s accreditation systems (Safe-T-Cert, ISO 14001, ISO 9001).
  • Carry out additional HSE-related compliance tasks and duties as assigned by the Head of Health, Safety & Sustainability.
