We’re looking for a Health and Safety Business Partner to join Northern’s Safety, Health, Environment & Crime (SHEC) team. In this role, you’ll play an important part in shaping a proactive safety culture, supporting leaders, and driving continuous improvement across our operations.

As Health and Safety Business Partner, you’ll act as a trusted advisor, guiding managers and teams, building strong relationships with industry partners, and ensuring we remain at the forefront of safety excellence.

ABOUT YOU

We’re seeking someone with the expertise, credibility, and passion to influence at all levels and promote operational safety excellence. You’ll bring:

  • A NEBOSH National Diploma (or working towards) and IOSH membership, with a proven track record in health & safety management in safety-critical operations.
  • Extensive knowledge of railway operations, with proven experience in train crew grades (such as Conductor, Driver, or similar roles) to demonstrate a practical understanding of frontline operational challenges.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interrogate data, identify trends and patterns, and translate findings into meaningful insights that support decisions and drive improvement.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with the confidence to influence, challenge, and coach colleagues at all levels to embed a proactive safety culture.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety legislation, standards, and management systems (HSG 65 / ISO 45001), combined with strong auditing and IT literacy.

Responsibilities

As a trusted advisor and coach, you’ll support leaders and teams while ensuring our safety systems are embedded and effective. Key responsibilities include:

  • Drive the development of a proactive safety culture across operations.
  • Integrate occupational health, safety, and risk management principles into day to day activities.
  • Identify hazards, lead on risk assessments, and ensure robust control measures are in place.
  • Deliver audits, investigations, and monitoring to maintain compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Support managers, build safety awareness, and act as a key link with industry partners and regulators.
