Description

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree (Level 8 or higher) in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering or a related field. A postgraduate diploma or Master’s in safety or environmental management is a plus.
  • Professional Certifications: A NEBOSH National/International Diploma in Occupational H&S, or an equivalent certification, is highly desirable. Membership in IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) – ideally at Chartered level (CMIOSH) or working towards it – is preferred, demonstrating adherence to high professional standards.
  • Experience: 5–7+ years’ experience in health and safety roles, with several years in a management capacity in construction or renewable energy sectors. Experience in developing and implementing H&S management systems across multiple sites is crucial. Familiarity with the specific H&S challenges of solar PV installations, electrical works, and construction projects in Ireland is expected.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of Irish H&S legislation and regulations, including construction site requirements and the roles of PSDP/PSCS under the construction regulations. Strong understanding of H&S standards such as ISO 45001 (Occupational H&S management), and working knowledge of ISO 14001 (Environmental) and ISO 9001 (Quality) systems. Ability to develop and maintain systems that meet these standards and to lead audits/certifications when required.
  • Other Skills: Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to prepare clear reports and deliver training sessions confidently. Strong leadership and influencing skills to promote a positive safety culture – able to engage workers at all levels and drive behaviour change through guidance and motivation. High level of organisation and attention to detail for managing documentation and follow-ups. A Safe Pass certification (mandatory) and a full driving licence (to visit sites regularly) are required. Additional useful certifications include first aid responder, and training in incident investigation techniques (e.g. TapRooT). Proficiency in IT tools (e.g. Excel, incident management software) for reporting and analysis is also important.
Responsibilities

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Health & Safety Manager at Mitros leads the development and enforcement of a “safety-first” culture as the company scales up its renewable energy projects. This role is pivotal in ensuring that all operations – from solar farm construction sites to office environments – comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations, and that every team member prioritises safe work practices. As H&S Manager, you will design and implement the company’s HSE (Health, Safety & Environmental) policies in line with Irish law and industry best practices. You’ll also serve as the go-to expert advising management on safety matters. In a growing EPC firm, the H&S Manager ensures that rapid expansion never comes at the cost of worker well-being or environmental stewardship, thereby safeguarding Mitros’s most important asset: its people.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • H&S Policy Development: Create, implement, and continually improve comprehensive health and safety policies and procedures for Mitros. Ensure these policies meet all legal requirements and reflect industry best practices. Regularly update the company Safety Statement and site safety plans, embedding Mitros’s “Everyone Home Safe Every Day” ethos into all operations.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Advisory: Monitor and ensure full compliance with relevant health and safety legislation in Ireland (e.g. Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and construction regulations) as well as applicable standards. Act as Mitros’s subject matter expert on H&S, advising senior management on compliance issues and interpreting new laws or guidelines for the team. Keep the organisation up to date on changes in H&S law or best practices and adjust policies accordingly.
  • Training & Safety Programs: Design and oversee effective safety training programmes for all employees and subcontractors. This includes managing site inductions, toolbox talks, and specialised training for high-risk activities (working at heights, electrical safety, etc.). Ensure every staff member (in the office or field) maintains required certifications (Safe Pass, manual handling, first aid, etc.) and receives ongoing education to reinforce a strong safety culture.
  • Safety Audits & Risk Management: Plan and conduct regular H&S audits and site inspections across all project sites and facilities. Identify hazards and evaluate risks, ensuring that robust risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) are in place for all activities. Oversee the development of risk assessment processes and verify that control measures are implemented effectively.
  • Incident Management & Continuous Improvement: Lead the response and investigation of any accidents, incidents, or near-misses. Ensure incidents are reported promptly and thoroughly investigated to determine root causes. Prepare detailed incident reports and corrective action plans, and use findings to drive continuous improvement in safety practices. Share “lessons learned” company-wide to prevent recurrence of similar issues.
  • H&S Leadership & Coordination: Supervise on-site Health & Safety Officers/advisors deployed in various divisions (utility projects, domestic installs, etc.). Provide guidance on complex safety issues and ensure consistent safety standards across all sites. Work closely with project managers and operations teams to integrate safety considerations into project planning and execution. Prepare regular H&S performance reports for senior leadership (summarising audit findings, incident stats, etc.), and advise executives on strategic H&S improvements.
