HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

This is a unique opportunity for a health and safety professional to develop their career in a large organisation that covers a broad spectrum of health and safety regulations. Working across a wide-ranging estate and service provision, this role offers valuable experience in applying health and safety practices within a complex and varied operational setting.

  • Salary: £30-35k DOE
  • Working hours: 08:30 - 17:00 - Monday to Friday - 37.5 hours per week, 52 weeks a year

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • At least 2 years experience in a health and safety role
  • NEBOSH General Certificate (minimum) or equivalent
  • A proactive mindset and strong willingness to learn
  • Confident communicator with the ability to advise and influence at all levels
  • Proactive, well-organised, and comfortable working across a large site
  • Able to research, understand, relay and implement regulatory information to internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with internal and external stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to work and communicate across all levels of the organisation
  • Strong problem-solving and risk profiling skills
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills with the ability to prioritise tasks
  • Ability to adapt and a willingness to work within a complex organisational structure
  • Experience of managing health and safety processes within an organisation
  • Experience of writing risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Excellent IT skills are critical to this role specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint,

Responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

The Health and Safety Officer will contribute to a positive health and safety culture and be responsible for enhancing the School’s approach to Health and Safety. They will report to the Head of Compliance, ensuring that health and safety is embedded in all areas and processes remain up to date with relevant regulations. The role will be supported by the Head of Compliance and work closely with operational leads across departments to deepen professional understanding of health and safety systems and legislation.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Promote and work with colleagues, commercial customers and contractors in determining safe working practices, ensuring that all areas have suitable and sufficient risk assessments and safe systems of work for their operations, events and activities and effective risk control measures.
  • Assist in the monitoring of health and safety compliance and processes across the business through inspections and audits; undertaking planned health and safety audits and inspections in addition to reactive inspections; this shall include the provision of reports to highlight where risk assessments and technical input and remedial actions are required.
  • Support the development of handbooks and policies.
  • To provide support, advice and facilitate training of Heads of Department and employees in their health and safety responsibilities, including induction, Health and Safety awareness training and toolbox talks.
  • Ensure the school is compliant with routine inspections, maintenance and remedial work and records are up to date.
  • Gain experience conducting audits and inspections as part of a structured programme.
  • Carry out investigations of accidents, incidents, and near misses under the guidance of the Head of Compliance, recommending measures to reduce the risk of recurrence.
  • Provide reports to the Head of Compliance.
  • Provide assistance as detailed in the emergency response plan.
  • Sit on the Health and Safety Committee.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of current and new legislative requirements relating to health and safety issues in order to interpret, evaluate and advise on the implications of such legislation.
  • Manage fire evacuation practices for all buildings on site and advise on any further actions.
  • Develop the health and safety Information Management System (MIS).
  • Perform other reasonable duties as requested.
