Description

We’re looking for a knowledgeable and passionate Health and Safety Officer to join our team in Wellington. In this dynamic, field-based role, you’ll support our Switched On Building Solutions teams and projects across the North Island—playing a key role in setting the tone for health and safety and ensuring best practices are consistently upheld.
Your ability to build strong relationships will be essential in fostering a culture of safety among staff and subcontractors. With a focus on promoting a safe working environment and supporting our operations team to deliver work safely and effectively, you’ll be instrumental in driving a positive safety culture.
This role involves travel to sites outside of Wellington and suits someone who thrives in a hands-on environment, works confidently and independently, and embraces the pace and complexity of a growing, fast-moving organisation.

Key duties include but not limited to:

  • Monitor work processes and collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure health and safety compliance
  • Identify, analyse, and report near misses and potential hazards including incident investigations and learnings.
  • Monitor ACC injuries and lead recovery-at-work programmes (where required)
  • Support and contribute to health and safety monitoring and training initiatives
  • Promote continuous improvement and embed best practices across all aspects of health and safety
  • Stay up to date with relevant legislation and assess its impact on the organisation
  • Meet clear monthly targets and performance expectations

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A New Zealand-recognised qualification in Health and Safety
  • Accident Investigation qualification and demonstrated experience
  • Proven experience in the development of site specific project safety plans
  • At least 2+ years of hands-on experience in a Health and Safety role within the construction industry or facilities maintenance.
  • Solid working knowledge of NZ Health, Safety and Environment legislation, with proven experience applying it in real-world settings
  • Proven experience in conducting site audits, incident investigations, and leading toolbox talks & safety briefings
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and educate leaders, teams and subcontractors on safe work practices
  • High attention to detail, with a proactive approach to identifying risks and implementing practical and pragmatic solutions
  • Self-motivated and organised, able to manage time effectively across multiple sites and priorities
  • A collaborative mindset and positive attitude, contributing to a supportive and safety-focused team culture
  • Ability to work (and even thrive) in ambiguity and highly adaptable
