We are currently searching for a Health & Safety Specialist to join our BC team at Emterra Group. This role will support all four recycling and waste centers and report to the GM Recycling and Waste Centers and Regional Health & Safety/ Risk Manager. The Health and Safety Specialist will be instrumental in establishing an actively caring safety culture, working closely with technical teams, and bridging procedural gaps with Metro Vancouver.

POSITION DESCRIPTION



    • Work closely with technical staff and operational teams to understand sites -specific processes and safety needs.

    • Lead and maintain exposure risk assessments, emergency response plans, and all safety documentation and manuals.
    • Serve as a primary liaison with customer engineers and safety personnel, confidently influencing and aligning procedures.
    • Conduct incident investigations as per the company’s procedures, identify the root cause and discuss with the stakeholders the corrective measures. Deliver toolbox talks, training sessions, memos, and safety communications across day and night shifts at the four sites
    • Support the response to incidents, such as spillage. , air quality compliance, and hazardous waste procedures and compliance
    • Support Joint Health and Safety Committees for the four sites and provide technical guidance on industrial hygiene, heavy equipment, and traffic control.
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and emerging safety trends relevant to the waste management industry.
    • Ensure compliance during inspections and audits, bridging gaps between operations, maintenance and contractual safety requirements.

    SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS



      • 2–5 years of experience in health & safety, preferably in Recycling, such as an MRF or a processing facility, Hazardous waste, landfill operations, oil and gas, and logistics.

      • Proven ability to coach, influence, and manage difficult conversations with staff and external Stakeholders.
      • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a dynamic, collaborative team.
      • Ability to manage multiple priorities across multiple sites and meet deadlines.
      • Completion of post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, industrial hygiene or equivalent experience and training.
      • CRSP, CSP, or CSE designation (or in progress) is an asset.
      • Experience working in unionized environments.
      • Proven experience designing and delivering safety training and presentations.
      • Excellent command of English (verbal and written) with strong presentation skills.
      • Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
      • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between sites (~20% of the time).
      • Assertive, confident, and able to bridge technical gaps with external partners.
