Description:
The SHARP Foundation provides a spectrum of integrated care and support to individuals living in a residential setting. The Foundation was established in 1990 and currently operates 4 facilities in Calgary. SHARP is a leader in harm reduction housing in Calgary.
We are currently seeking a caring, compassionate and non-judgemental casual Health Care Aide to work on an intermittent basis at several of our residential homes.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Our Caregivers provide support based on the individual needs of each client. All clients may have one or more co-morbidities including mental illness, brain injury, diabetes, cancers, blood-borne illnesses, histories of homelessness and poverty. The primary responsibility is to motivate and support the clients we serve to develop life and community skills and create a safe and supportive home-like environment. This may include assisting with some or all of the following:
Psychosocial Support
· Motivate clients to engage in their health and wellness
· Engage clients in activities – crafts, games, etc.
· Assess emotional well-being of each resident.
· Actively listen to issues and concerns in a confidential and non-judgemental manner
· Assist with problem resolution on an individual or group basis
Medical Support
· Administer medications in a safe and timely manner
· Contact appropriate medical supports when necessary
· Advise supervisor of any substantial changes to resident’s health status
Spiritual Support
· Respect each individual’s beliefs and values
· Listen in a non-judgmental manner
· Provide comfort and reassurance
Other responsibilities include:
· Communicate with doctors, nurses, other care attendants and volunteers
· Record daily activities into an online database (training provided)
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
· Supervision provided by the Health Manager
· Work in a team environment with other SHARP employees, contractors and volunteers
QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE:
· Experience in providing compassionate care and support
· Health Care Aide Certificate/Diploma
· Current CPR and WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) certification (required)
· Computer skills – accessing the internet, email and use of Microsoft Office (Word)
· Knowledge of blood-borne illnesses (asset)
· Willingness to have Naloxone Training
· Food Safety Certification (asset)
