ABOUT US
The office of the Public Trustee of Nova Scotia is an independent corporation sole that is responsible for the administration of the estates of infants, of deceased persons, incompetent persons, and missing persons and which acts as statutory decision maker under the Hospitals Act, the Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act and the Personal Directives Act.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
You possess a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field (nursing, social work, occupational therapy, physiotherapy) and are licensed or eligible for licensure with your respective college plus 5 years related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience (in an acute or long-term care facility, a community health care setting, or a social and health care agency making front-line case management decisions, treatment decisions or providing advocacy services or rights advice) may be considered. A post-graduate degree is considered an asset in this role, as is detailed knowledge of the policies and procedures used in the Office of the Public Trustee.
As our successful candidate, you will demonstrate the ability to work on a professional team and manage a high volume of competing priorities regarding complex and sensitive issues in a professional manner. You will have excellent knowledge and understanding of legislation and common law relating to health care decisions, as well as policies concerning long term care placement and home care services.
In this role, knowledge of computer systems, software and applications is necessary to access data and generate information. You also require analytical skills and an understanding of the health care sector, including issues related to mentally incapable adults.
Our successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal communication skills including the ability to negotiate and mediate difficult conversations. You will be skilled in conflict resolution and be able to establish and maintain professional relationships with others (including peers, clients, stakeholders, relatives, attorneys, financial guardians, health care professionals, administrators, colleagues and the public) under stressful and sensitive circumstances.
The Consultant requires organizational and case management skills and ability to meet response deadlines, set work priorities and work under pressure. Attention to detail is required. As the successful candidate, you will have a keen awareness of the cultural, sociological and religious aspects to be considered in making appropriate treatment decisions on behalf of individual clients.
