The Health & Safety Advisor provides leadership to drive a healthy workplace. They have the knowledge and skills to promote a positive health and safety culture at Georgia Main Food Group Limited (GMFG) and its Fresh St. Market, IGA BC and Meiga Supermarket banners.
The position is responsible for ensuring that all health & safety policies and practices are aligned with BC legislation. They plan and implement programs and monitor and review policies and procedures. They work closely with management to minimize operational losses due to injury, occupational health problems, accidents, and injuries at all our retail locations. In this role you will be working independently and require good interpersonal skills in order to develop strong professional relationships with store management and staff.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Works in partnership with Human Resources and Operations
  • Organizes and attends Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings regularly
  • Monitors minutes of JHSC at head office and stores; follows up if necessary
  • Creates and implements new projects to promote Health & Safety awareness in all areas of the company
  • Plans and arranges all First Aid training and other applicable training
  • Maintains Health & Safety signage
  • Ensures appropriate staff are trained in First Aid, WHMIS, Violence Prevention
  • Conducts random annual Health & Safety audits and reports findings
  • Keeps records of inspection findings and produces reports suggesting improvements/corrective action
  • Oversees and develops safety standards and processes applicable to all areas of the company and its banners
  • Conduct hazard identification risk assessments and create relevant safe work procedures.
  • Provides leadership in developing, communicating and implementing an occupational health and safety vision, strategies and key performance indicators, ensuring that they align with and support the company’s direction and priorities
  • Implements programs to enhance the utilization rates for various preventative clinics and training
  • Performs in-house training with all employees about health and safety issues and risks
  • Trains management /leadership to facilitate the safety walks and JHSC meetings
  • Proactively implements policies, programs and practices to develop a strong safety culture that will evolve into a culture committee for employee and customer safety at all locations
  • Provides Management and executives with reporting and presentations including but not limited to accident investigations, training, results of audits
  • Initiates, maintains and revises current Health & Safety documentation
  • Ensures new stores receive all the appropriate Health & Safety information and training before opening
  • Liaises with Provincial Health and Safety and or WCB officers and respond to all inspection reports
  • Manages WorkSafe BC injury claims and return to work programs including the management of temporary or permanent requests for accommodation.
  • Other duties as assigned

What You Bring:

  • Strong time management skills with an ability to work independently and self-motivate
  • Experience in a unionized retail environment is considered an asset.
  • Experience managing workplace Health & Safety programs, policies and regulations
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent coaching, facilitation and training skills; as well as a high degree of discretion when dealing with sensitive information.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Calm demeanor in emergency situations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 5 years in a retail grocery setting with hands on Health & Safety experience.
  • Experience with WorkSafe BC and/or OSHA regulations, and the implementation of new Occupational Health & Safety policies.
  • Experience managing workplace injury claims is an asset.
  • Certification in Occupational Health & Safety or relevant post-secondary degree is an asset.
