The Health & Safety Advisor provides leadership to drive a healthy workplace. They have the knowledge and skills to promote a positive Health & Safety culture at Georgia Main Food Group Limited (GMFG) and its Fresh St. Market and IGA BC banners.
The position is responsible for ensuring that all Health & Safety policies and practices are aligned with BC legislation. They plan and implement programs and monitor and review policies and procedures. They work closely with management and the Human Resource Team to minimize operational losses due to injury, occupational health problems, accidents, and injuries at all our retail locations. In this role you will be working independently and require good interpersonal skills to develop strong professional relationships with store management and staff.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Works in partnership with Human Resources and Store Operations, overseeing the company’s Health & Safety program at all corporate store locations, and offering support when needed to franchise store locations. The majority of the time will be spent in our retail locations.
  • Organizes and regularly attends Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings, monitors meeting minutes and follows up where necessary.
  • Creates and implements new programs to promote Health & Safety awareness in all areas of the company, as well as Wellness programs to promote and improve the physical, mental, and emotional health of individuals
  • Ensures appropriate staff are trained in First Aid, WHMIS, and Violence Prevention, and arranges training as needed.
  • Conducts random Health & Safety audits and reports findings, including suggested improvements and corrective actions
  • Oversees and develops safety standards and processes applicable to all areas of the company and its banners
  • Identifies hazards, performs risk assessments and creates relevant safe work procedures.
  • Provides expertise in developing, communicating and implementing an occupational health and safety vision, strategies and key performance indicators, ensuring that they align with and support the company’s strategic direction and priorities
  • Organizes preventative clinics and training, and implements programs to enhance utilization rates
  • Performs in-house training with all employees about Health & Safety issues and risks
  • Trains management/leadership to facilitate the safety walks and JHSC meetings
  • Proactively implements policies, programs and practices to develop a strong safety culture for employees and customers at all locations
  • Provides Management and Executives with reporting and presentations including but not limited to accident investigations, training, and results of audits
  • Initiates, maintains and revises current Health & Safety documentation and signage
  • Ensures new stores receive all the appropriate Health & Safety documents, signage and training prior to opening
  • Liaises with WorkSafe BC officers and responds to all inspection reports
  • Manages WorkSafe BC injury claims and return to work programs including the management of temporary or permanent requests for accommodation.
  • Manages the WorkSafe BC accounts for all locations.
  • Other duties as assigned

What You Bring:

  • Strong time management skills with an ability to work independently and self-motivate
  • Experience in a unionized retail environment is considered an asset.
  • Experience managing workplace Health & Safety programs, policies and regulations
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent coaching, facilitation and training skills; as well as a high degree of discretion when dealing with sensitive information.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Calm demeanor in emergency situations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with WorkSafe BC and/or OSHA regulations, and the implementation of new Occupational Health & Safety policies and programs.
  • Experience managing workplace injury claims.
  • Certification in Occupational Health & Safety or relevant post-secondary degree is an asset.
  • This position will require you to travel to our stores located throughout BC.
  • This position requires a valid BC Driver’s License and a Driver’s Abstract
