HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT (HSE) COORDINATOR

The Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Coordinator is a key partner in the delivery of a wide range of health, safety, and environmental initiatives, programs and training. The HSE Coordinator will be responsible for developing and implementing safety policies and procedures, conducting safety training, and ensuring that all work activities adhere to the highest standards of safety. The HSE Coordinator will have a proactive approach to establishing and maintaining safe working relationships. This position plays a key role in the promotion of the Alimak Group Canada Ltd. core values and company culture.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of 2-5 years of relevant experience in a construction safety environment, where they have honed their skills in risk assessment, prevention, and regulatory compliance
  • Strong foundation of knowledge and experience in occupational health and safety practices
  • Strong working knowledge of the laws and regulations governing workplace health and safety
  • National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) Certification or equivalent is preferred
  • Possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1 certification, enabling them to respond effectively to on-site emergencies
  • Strong problem-solving skills, creativity, and the ability to engage cross-functional teams in deploying solutions.
  • Must have attention to detail, strong organizational and recordkeeping skills, and the ability to influence stakeholders across all levels of the organization to prioritize safety
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and above average written and verbal communication skills including the ability to champion change and make presentations to employees and managers
  • Possess and maintain a valid BC driver’s License
  • Must be a Canadian Resident
  • Must have minimum valid Construction Safety Officer (CSO) Certification

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to work at extreme heights
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Able to work outdoors, in all seasons
  • Able to work in an office environment
  • Able to sit for long periods of time
  • Able to stand, climb, reach, bend, along with other similar activities to perform safety inspections and audits
  • Standard 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday in office (site visits as needed)

Responsibilities
  • Promotes a robust culture of health, safety, and environmental stewardship within the organization
  • Ensures the health, safety, and well-being of all Alimak Group Canada employees
  • Ensures compliance with all relevant health and safety programs, policies, collective agreement provisions, legislation, and regulations
  • Provides clear direction, support, and leadership to supervisors and employees to foster a robust safety culture
  • Works closely with management to develop, implement, monitor, and continuously improve the Project Safety Plan using electronic Construction Safety Management System
  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive HSE programs that mitigate risks, prevent accidents, and foster a culture of safety across all levels of the organization
  • Conducts regular safety audits, identifying potential hazards, and recommending corrective actions to maintain a secure working environment
  • Tracks and reports on a comprehensive set of health and safety key performance indicators (KPIs) for assessing the effectiveness of the company’s health and safety initiatives, identifying areas for improvement, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and industry best practices
  • Works to align all health and safety activities with the program’s objectives, ensuring a cohesive and integrated approach to risk management
  • Collaborates with all departments to foster a shared commitment to health and safety excellence
  • Facilitates and chairs Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings to collaborate on safety matters, and interfaces with regulatory bodies like WorkSafe BC to address any issues or opportunities
  • Performs new employee orientations pertaining to health and safety
  • Researches, develops and delivers occupational health & safety training
  • Conducts jobsite inspections and safety observations to verify compliance with procedures and regulations
  • Develops and updates critical safety documentation like Safe Work Practices (SWPs), Safe Job Procedures (SJPs) and training materials
  • Revise company Safe Work Procedures and Programs and subsequent training materials to align with industry standards.
  • Updates core HSE management system where investigations reveal gaps in existing Safe Work Practices (SWP), Safe Job Procedures (SJP), or training programs
  • Conducts thorough incident investigations, utilizing advanced root cause analysis techniques to uncover the underlying factors that led to the event and hold an aptitude for developing and implementing targeted corrective actions that address identified deficiencies in processes, equipment, training, or culture
  • Establishes robust systems for monitoring and follow-up to verify that remedial actions have been effective and that compliance with HSE standards is consistently maintained over time
  • Serves as a catalyst for continuous improvement, driving the organization towards an ingrained culture of safety excellence
  • Build strong relationships with employees, supervisors, and management to foster a culture of safety and promote the importance of health and environmental protection in the workplace
