Description
Responsibilities

As the Health & Safety Manager at Askham Bryan College, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all students, staff, and visitors across the College. Based predominantly at our York campus, with travel to other sites, you will take responsibility for the development, implementation, and ongoing management of health and safety policies, procedures, and systems that ensure full statutory compliance. Your work will help maintain a safe environment by overseeing all health and safety practices across the College estate, ensuring that both academic and non-academic functions operate safely and in line with regulatory requirements.
In this key role, you will be the ‘competent person’ on all health and safety matters, offering advice and support to leaders, managers, and staff. You will lead the delivery of health and safety training, fire safety management, accident investigations, and risk assessments, as well as ensuring the College is prepared for emergencies, including lockdown procedures and pandemics. You will manage and maintain systems for accident reporting, ensure first aid provisions are always available, and coordinate fire safety processes, including drills and training.
As a budget holder for the Health & Safety Department, you will manage financial resources effectively and liaise with both internal and external stakeholders, including contractors, external agencies, and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). You will also be responsible for generating reports for key College committees, ensuring continuous improvement in all areas of health and safety.
This is an exciting opportunity to have a significant impact on the College’s health and safety culture, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation while contributing to a safe and healthy environment that supports the educational mission of Askham Bryan College.

Start Date: The College operates 2 starter/induction days per month to welcome and onboard new members. These are usually the first Monday and third Wednesday of each month (unless there is a bank holiday).
