TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION YOU MUST MEET THE QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: assisting a surgical physician with medical and surgical treatment of disorders, injuries, and diseases of the ear, nose, and throat by performing sterile dressing changes, suture removal, sterilization of surgical instruments, and maintenance of sterile conditions in the operating room or clinic; as well as performing patient administrative duties for a surgical ward. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-5).

EDUCATION

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as first surgical assistant and/or scrub assistant in major and minor procedures. Assist in triage of common head and neck conditions.
  • In accordance with aseptic requirements set up equipment in order to ensure a sterile field. Hand instruments and/or supplies to the surgeon during an operative procedure.
  • Assist physicians during specialized diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures. Assemble needed sterile and non-sterile supplies in order to hand sterile items to the physician.
  • Perform dressing changes in accordance with standards within clinic treatment areas. Administer topical medications in preparation for laryngoscopies.
  • Assist with biopsy procedures to include endoscopic biopsies. Perform binocular microscopy, cerumenectomy, tympanometry, and/or otoacoustic emissions screening.
