Position: Health, Wellbeing and Life Skills Teacher Reports to: Middle School Principal Teaching at Canadian Academy: Canadian Academy teachers inspire minds and nurture compassion by providing a rich and engaging programme that develops students’ skills, promotes curiosity and love of learning, and prioritizes well-being. All students follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Grades 6-10, and most students pursue the IB Diploma Programme (DP) in Grades 11 & 12, although 10-20% each year opt for a more personalized pathway to graduation that includes a mix of DP and other courses and leads to a CA Diploma. Teaching and learning are enriched by opportunities for exploration in the arts, athletics, outdoor education, service, and more. Position Overview Canadian Academy (CA) seeks a thoughtful, skilled, and student-centered Health, Wellbeing and Life Skills Teacher to design, coordinate, and deliver a comprehensive program focused on student well-being, personal development, and informed decision-making. This role plays a vital part in supporting students’ social, emotional, and physical well-being, and in equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions they need to navigate adolescence and early adulthood with confidence, empathy, and resilience. The Health and Life Skills Teacher works closely with counselors, advisors, administrators, and families to create a safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate learning environment that reflects CA’s mission, values, and commitment to student well-being. Position Responsibilities: Teaching and Learning Design and deliver engaging, age-appropriate Health and Life Skills curriculum across assigned grade levels (Grades 6–12). Teach topics including, but not limited to: Physical, emotional, and mental well-being Sexuality education and human development Healthy relationships, consent, and boundaries Mental health literacy and help-seeking skills Substance use, risk behaviors, and positive decision-making Digital citizenship, online safety, and media literacy Identity, self-esteem, and personal values Create a classroom environment that is respectful, inclusive, and psychologically safe, where students feel comfortable engaging in sensitive discussions. Use a variety of instructional strategies that promote reflection, discussion, critical thinking, and real-world application. Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs and backgrounds. Student Well-Being and Support Collaborate closely with school counselors, learning support staff, advisors, and administrators to support student well-being. Recognize and respond appropriately to student concerns, following CA safeguarding, child protection, and duty-of-care protocols. Support school-wide initiatives related to student well-being, belonging, and positive school culture. Curriculum Development and Collaboration Contribute to the ongoing review, development, and alignment of the PK-12 Health and Life Skills curriculum, including working with Elementary School teachers and the ES Leadership Team to advise on the development and delivery of a coherent PK-5 health scope and sequence Ensure curriculum reflects current best practices, research, and international-school contexts, while being culturally responsive and appropriate for Japan. Communicate proactively with families about curriculum goals, content, and learning outcomes. Participate actively in departmental, divisional, and whole-school meetings and professional learning. Serve as homeroom Advisor for a group of approximately 10 Middle or High School students Supervise Personal Projects/Extended Essays as needed to support the academic program For teachers with the relevant interest and experience, there is the possibility of teaching another MYP or DP subject All Canadian Academy teachers are expected to: Create a vibrant classroom environment that nurtures meaningful connections and cultivates a deep sense of care and compassion Design, prepare, and deliver learning activities that promote inquiry and facilitate authentic engagement Identify and select instructional resources and methods to meet students' varying needs and are in line with the programs and ethos of the school Use relevant technology to enhance teaching and learning Design and implement a range of authentic formative and summative assessments to inform instructional decisions Maintain accurate and complete records of students' learning data to provide timely feedback, design appropriate learning engagements, and facilitate reporting Enthusiastically contribute to co-curricular programming (as a club supervisor, coach, etc.) and outdoor education experiences Adhere to and advocate for our Child Safeguarding Policy and best practices in child protection Collaborate daily with relevant colleagues to enable effective co-planning, co-teaching, and co-assessment Contribute actively and thoughtfully in faculty meetings, collaborating with colleagues to enhance student learning and school initiatives Engage enthusiastically in school events and parent meetings, fostering strong connections within the school community and supporting student success Lead by example with respectful, clear, and timely communication, fostering trust and meaningful connections with students, colleagues, and parents Embrace opportunities for growth by actively engaging in professional development and continually enhancing your skills to inspire and elevate the learning community Endorse the school’s Guiding Statements Required Qualifications and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, Education, Psychology, Counseling, Social Sciences, or a related field Teaching certification or equivalent professional qualification. Experience teaching health, life skills, well-being, or related subjects to adolescents. Strong understanding of adolescent development and mental health. Experience in an international school setting is an asset.
