Description Position Overview The Heavy Equipment Mechanic analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains landscaping and grounds maintenance equipment such as agricultural tractors, rotary mowers, and bush hog equipment. This worker operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles and reassembles equipment, examines parts for damage or excessive wear, replaces damaged or defective equipment, and tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency. In addition to this work, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic also performs as a Tractor Operator performing grounds maintenance activities at Ft. Bragg. This includes driving gasoline or diesel powered tractors to conduct grass cutting/trimming, move equipment/materials, fasten attachments such as mower decks, etc. Key Responsibilities · Diagnoses and analyzes malfunctions in heavy equipment such as tractors, diesel and gasoline engines, rotary mowers, and bush hog equipment, and determines necessary repairs using manuals, schematics, and test equipment. · Repairs, adjusts, or overhauls major assemblies including engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and brake systems. · Performs scheduled preventive maintenance such as lubricating parts, changing oil, and replacing filters. · Removes and replaces damaged and defective parts as required. · Operate agricultural tractors, rotary mowers, and bush hog equipment to maintain over 3,200 acres of ranges, airfields, and training areas. · Perform mowing, trimming, edging, and debris removal. · Conduct pre-operation inspections and perform preventative maintenance on equipment to ensure continuous operations · Safely operate on uneven terrain, slopes exceeding 15 degrees, and around obstacles such as runway lighting, signage, and structures · Maintain clear visibility of critical airfield systems (runway lights, taxiway markers, PAPI/REILS systems) by ensuring vegetation control · Remove debris and police work areas before and after mowing to prevent Foreign Object Damage (FOD) hazards · Follow all OSHA, Army Safety (AR 385-10), and environmental compliance standards during operations · Coordinate daily work activities with Range Control and Airfield Operations · Maintain situational awareness while working in active military training and airfield environments · Maintain professional demeanor and attitude with military and civilian personnel · Support seasonal and emergency operations including erosion control, storm cleanup, and hazard response · 40 hours a week · Other job requirements as directed by management. Qualifications/Requirements · High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. · Must be CAC eligible and/or able to obtain a Common Access Card (CAC) · Must be a U.S. Citizen · A valid North Carolina driver’s license, with a valid NC Class B commercial driver’s license preferred · Minimum of three (3) years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance experience Disclaimer The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.
