Primary objective
Provide high-level technical and logistical support for the Regional Ecosystem and Landscape Mapping (REALM) multidisciplinary
team. The position is based in the NT Herbarium and will work with Herbarium staff in the curation and maintenance of the
Herbarium specimen collection and floristic databases.
Context statement
The Flora and Fauna and Rangelands Divisions are jointly developing the REALM mapping program across the Northern Territory.
The mapping will integrate vegetation, soil and landscape information to develop uniform ecosystem and landscape mapping for
the Northern Territory. The position is based in the NT Herbarium, Flora and Fauna Division, which is the primary authority on the
identity, distribution and conservation status of NT plants.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary REALM team to deliver innovative ecosystem and landscape mapping.
2. Lead logistical planning and undertake fieldwork, including field site assessment, sometimes in remote areas for extended
periods.
3. Ensure field equipment is maintained and available for safe operation, including four-wheel drive vehicles.
4. Collate, enter and update field data and floristic collection records in key corporate databases and prepared technical
documentation as required.
5. Work with geographic information systems (GIS) to support the mapping program.
6. Support Herbarium staff in the ongoing maintenance of the Herbarium specimen collection including curation, flora
identification, botanical queries and advice or other duties are required.
7. Contribute to the training and management of Herbarium volunteers.
8. Communicate with government agencies, landowners, managers and industry groups.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to plan, organise and undertake, field work in small teams and follow WHS guidelines.
2. An understanding of and/or experience in vegetation assessment techniques.
3. Knowledge of and experience in herbarium curatorial, operating and maintenance procedures.
4. Competence in using computer systems including Microsoft products and knowledge of and/or experience using geographic
information systems (GIS) and geographic coordinate systems.
5. Competence in working with data, demonstrating standards of accuracy and attention to detail.
6. An interest in and willingness to learn NT native plant species and botanical nomenclature.
7. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in teams while working independently to deliver tasks responsibly.
8. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both written and orally, with a wide range of people including scientific and
non-scientific and diverse cultural backgrounds.
9. Current Northern Territory driver’s licence or equivalent.
Desirable
1. Experience working in tropical conditions.
2. A relevant scientific or technical qualification from a recognised tertiary institution.
3. Ability to operate a four-wheel drive
