The Job We are looking for a bilingual (English–Spanish) high school ELA tutor to work in-person with students in Queens, NYC. Students need support in reading comprehension, writing skills, and preparation for the English Regents Exam. Our tutoring model emphasizes structured, skill-building instruction to help students improve both academically and in their confidence using English in academic settings. Tutors will work approximately 18 hours per week, across 3 days, from 8:30 AM – 2:30 PM, providing in-person instruction at a Queens high school. Responsibilities Provide engaging, structured ELA instruction in small-group settings. Support students in key literacy skills such as reading comprehension, essay writing, grammar, and textual analysis. Deliver instruction in both English and Spanish, supporting students’ bilingual development and comprehension. Integrate study and language acquisition strategies (e.g., organizing written responses, annotating texts, using context clues) into lessons. Take daily attendance using a personal device (mobile phone) or a school-issued laptop. Communicate professionally with school staff and Toolkit Tutors leadership. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution (completed, or close to completion showing strong academic performance). At least one year of experience teaching or tutoring in a school or educational setting. Experience working with urban school communities and an understanding of the challenges students face. Strong content knowledge in high school ELA Punctual, reliable, and committed to student success. Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage students effectively. Ability to commute to the school location in Queens. DOE fingerprint clearance strongly preferred.
