JOB SUMMARY

The High School Guidance Counselor is responsible for working as a team with school, parents, and the community to provide a complete, developmental counseling program focusing on academic, career, and personal/social development; managing the schedules and placement of assigned students; providing course and curriculum information and recommendations to students; developing plans and/or providing information regarding students’ goals; ensuring completion of students’ college applications within designated time frame; and creating an atmosphere to meet student needs through prevention, identification, and intervention. This position serves a vital ministry purpose in the school as the counselor helps to inform and guide students in discovering their calling and make aligning decisions for their future.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Pupil Personnel Services Credential required.
  2. B.A. in psychology or related field required.
  3. Relevant Master’s Degree preferred.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  5. Strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines.
  6. Experience in college admissions or high school college counseling, teaching experience, and computer skills are necessary.
  7. Familiarity with the goals, objectives, and mission of an independent college preparatory school.
  8. The ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population.
  9. Knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admission policies, and financial policies and procedures.
    10.Ability to create and maintain relationships and demonstrate an ability to work effectively with administrators, faculty, staff and students.
  10. First Aid/CPR certificate.
  11. TB clearance within last four years.
  12. Criminal Justice fingerprint clearance.
Responsibilities

The Guidance Counselor is responsible for administering all aspects of the academic counseling, college search, and admissions process, including the following:
1. Program Monitoring & Improvement: Reviewing, adjusting, and improving the counseling program each year.
2. Academic Counseling:
I. Leading the course selection process for students and creating annual class schedules for students that align with graduation and college requirements, specifically UC a-g.
II. Learning and utilizing SCS SIS technology to streamline the course scheduling process.
III. Holding individual counseling meetings with students and parents.
IV. Serving as the AP, UC a-g, & NCAA coordinator.
3. College Counseling:.
I. Conducts group seminars and individual meetings with students and parents to educate and guide the college selection, application, and acceptance process.
II. Managing student college and career information and tasks through Naviance. Assigning relevant tasks at each grade level and creating an environment for students to process their calling and future.
III. Educating students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing; advising and supporting students and families as they go through the process.
IV. Conducting group seminars and individual meetings with students and parents to educate and guide the college selection, application, and acceptance process.
V. Monitoring the application process and ensuring deadlines are met.
VI. Celebrating student acceptances and promoting an environment of high achievement.
4. College Fair, Career Fair, and College Rep Visits:
I. Overseeing the annual College Fair. Arranging college reps, communicating with families, and scheduling relevant activities around the fair.
II. Overseeing the annual Career Fair. Arranging college reps, communicating with families, and scheduling relevant activities around the fair.
III. Scheduling College reps to come to campus to present to students throughout the year.
5. Coordinating the administration of PSAT, ACT, and AP Testing:
I. Ordering tests, creating the testing schedule, and facilitating testing for the high school.
II. Retrieving reports and working with the administrative team on response to data.
6. Response to Intervention:
I. Working with administrative team to facilitate an effective response to intervention. This includes running reports identifying struggling students, helping facilitate after school tutoring, and ensuring students have the resources to be successful in the classroom.
7. SSI Counseling Support
i. Support SSI overseas schools by creating resources for sites to use for college counseling and direction.
ii. Providing some 1:1 counseling to SSI students when appropriate.
8. All other duties as assigned.
