American Consultants is looking for an HIM Manager for a critical access hospital about an hour from Springfield, IL
Job Summary:
The HIM Manager is accountable for overall leadership, management, and operational oversight of health information in compliance with federal and state laws. The manager is responsible for coding, scanning, release of information, cancer registry, chart completion, health information privacy and documentation. The manager will provide leadership, management, and operational oversight to Medical Staff services.

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Certified Professional Coder Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or extensive education and/or certifications in health information management required.
  • Three years of experience required in both hospital and clinic coding of technical and professional components.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations for Critical Access Hospital and Provider Based Rural Health Clinics preferred.

Responsibilities

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees daily operations of the HIM department including workload and staffing; hiring, disciplining, and performance evaluations; training; and monitoring quality of work.
  • Develops departmental goals, objectives, plans, and programs and ensures they are implemented.
  • Develops, maintains, and enforces departmental policies and procedures to comply with current State and Federal regulations.
  • Assists in planning, developing, and controlling the HIM departmental operating and capital budgets.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts and oversees coding audit efforts and coordinates monitoring of coding accuracy and documentation adequacy. Reports noncompliance issues detected through auditing and monitoring, corrective action plans, and results of follow up audits to hospital administration and the compliance officer.
  • Oversees chart completion on all discharged patients for accuracy and timeliness.
  • Monitors and maintains, acceptable accounts receivables associated with un-coded charts.
  • Evaluates the impact of innovations and changes in programs, policies, and procedures for the HIM department. Design and implement systems and methods to improve data accessibility. Identifies, assesses, and resolves problems.
  • Prepare reports as requested by administration.
  • Oversees and monitors the coding compliance program. Develops and coordinates educational and training programs regarding elements of the coding compliance program such as appropriate documentation and accurate coding to all appropriate staff including coding staff, physicians, billing staff, and ancillary departments. Ensure the appropriate dissemination and communication of regulatory, policy, and guideline changes.
  • Conduct trend analyses to identify patterns and variations in coding practices and case-mix index. Compares coding and reimbursement profile with national and regional norms to identify variations requiring further investigation.
  • Reviews claim denials and rejections pertaining to coding and medical necessity issues, and implements corrective action plan to prevent similar denials and rejections from recurring.
  • Interacts with a variety of people who impact the success of the coding compliance program, and functions as a facilitator, liaison, and/or motivator.
  • Oversees patient advocacy on release of information and patient portal assistance.
  • Monitors release of medical information in accordance with organizational policies and procedures, as well as Federal and State regulations.
  • Maintains complete and accurate cancer registry filing on all cancer cases.
  • Monitor accuracy and necessity of documents scanned to patient records.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Medical Officer and Medical Staff Leaders to plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the programs and activities of the Medical Staff.
  • Ensures the strategies of the Medical Staff are supported and attained, goals and plans are realized, and there is adherence to the requirements of regulatory and accreditation bodies that are relevant to the organized Medical Staff.
  • Interacts with Informatics to ensure data integrity and accurate documentation practices.
  • Collaborates with the IT department on prescribing, system access for medical staff, and medical record suspension support.
