Description
Responsible for performing all Histology functions and procedures for all patient specimens that include responding to frozen sections, immunostaining and special staining by both automated and manual methods. Processes tissues for microscopic examination. Operates instrumentation, prepares reagents and maintains records according to established policies and procedures. Communicates with nursing and physicians regarding patient specimens and results. Essential Functions · Maintains a high level of productivity, versatility and cooperation, the Histotechnologist (HT) performs all tests as specified in procedure manuals and protocols in compliance with the standards of practice. The HT is expected to comply with standards of practice. · Checks to ensure patient demographics and specimen source match. Independently assesses quality of specimen with regard to adequate volume, received in proper transport solution and container and received within acceptable time limits. · Promptly notifies appropriate individuals when inadequate specimens are received, and documents so patient care is not compromised · Assists the pathologist with frozen section procedures. · Tests are performed as per procedure and within the guidelines and limitations of the test to ensure accuracy of results. · Solutions and stains are prepared following written procedures. · Tissues are processed, cut and mounted on slides appropriately for staining as per procedure. If not listed, is able to assess the correct method through use of reference material. · Slides are correctly stained, cover slipped and labeled for examination. · Tissue blocks and slides are filed and stored in proper order for retrieval when necessary. · Obtains tissues for special studies and expedites process according to department protocol. · Prepares and sends out any outside consults for special procedures. · Demonstrates competency in all Histotechnologist and Histology Assistant procedures annually. Education Associate's Degree Histology Or Associate's Degree Related Science License/Registration Clinical Lab Technologist - Issued by Florida or Compact State Work Experience and Additional Information One year experience in Histology in Hospital laboratory setting
