Casual (Per Diem) Histology Assistant – In Situ Hybridization Laboratory Join our dynamic specialty laboratory in the Department of Anatomic Pathology! We are seeking a motivated Casual (Per Diem) Histology Assistant to support our In Situ Hybridization Laboratory, with a flexible, variable daylight schedule following training. In this role, you’ll contribute to essential diagnostic databasing in our solid tumor FISH lab and help organize key information that guides new probe development and research initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a cutting-edge lab environment while working a flexible schedule. If you’re detail-oriented, curious, and excited about supporting molecular diagnostics, we’d love to meet you! Responsibilities: Act as a courteous liaison at the main desk between pathologists, clinicians, residents, and others, being attentive to their requests concerning histology services. Assume compliance with the hospital philosophy and mission of excellence to patients, physicians, visitors, and other employees throughout all daily activities. Perform inventory of supplies and reagents and order as necessary. Answer telephone, notify appropriate personnel immediately, direct person or calls, and take messages when appropriate. Transport and maintain the workflow of the slides throughout the histology process. Organize; label all slides, making sure the slides are sent to the proper staff (Triage). Perform Quality Assurance of labels and slides for patient ID Integrity. File the blocks at the end of the day and maintain slide filing system. Monitor the fax machine. Perform daily maintenance of the Histology instruments and equipment as appropriate. Comply with all pathology/histology departmental and UPMC policies and procedures. Monitor the tube system and dispense work to the appropriate technicians. Perform Reagent preparation. High School Diploma. 6 months experience in clinical lab preferred.
