Description The dermpath laboratory assistant handles supportive and clerical tasks to ensure the laboratory runs smoothly under the supervision of certified technologists and pathologists. We have part time work available which is ideal for HT students or paraprofessionals in this field. Responsibilities include: Specimen management Accession and label incoming tissue specimens and requisitions with accurate patient and clinical information. Ensure proper specimen identification and integrity throughout the lab workflow. Log specimen information into the lab's information management system (LIMS). Prepare specimens for gross examination, which includes handling, logging, and storing tissue samples. Maintain accurate records of the specimen chain of custody. Sample preparation and processing Assist in loading and unloading automated tissue processors, stainers, and cover-slippers. Embed tissue samples in paraffin blocks after receiving proper training. Organize and prepare paraffin blocks and glass slides for the microtomy (cutting) and staining processes. Deliver prepared slides and requisitions to the pathologist for microscopic examination. Laboratory maintenance and support Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments. Wash and chemically clean laboratory glassware. Prepare and rotate staining solutions. Ensure adequate supplies are available and place orders when needed. Follow all safety protocols, including infection control and handling biohazardous waste. Keep the laboratory work area clean and organized. Administrative and clerical duties Manage and retrieve stored slides and paraffin blocks. Assist with sending out slides or reports to external laboratories or institutions. Requirements High school diploma or GED equivalent. A Bachelor's degree in a science-related field, such as biology or chemistry, is preferred. Prior lab or histology experience is a plus, but not necessary. Key skills Attention to detail: Accuracy is critical for labeling and handling specimens to ensure correct patient diagnoses. Organizational skills: Ability to manage and track multiple specimens and records efficiently. Communication: Strong verbal and written skills for interacting with lab staff, pathologists, and other medical professionals. Adaptability: Ability to follow established procedures and learn new techniques quickly. Teamwork: A collaborative mindset to work effectively with technologists and pathologists. Punctuality: Reliability and strong time management skills to ensure efficient lab operations.
