UPMC Laboratory – Williamsport, PA is currently hiring in our Pathology Department, seeking a dedicated Histology professional to join our team. This is a full-time position with 8.5-hour shifts, starting between 5:00 AM and 5:30 AM. The role includes participation in a 6-week on-call rotation, with weekend on-call hours being: Saturday & Sunday:4:00 PM – 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM There are no regularly scheduled weekend or holiday shifts outside of the on-call rotation. We welcome all candidates, from entry-level to experienced histotechnicians. While prior experience is strongly preferred, we are open to training the right candidate. Placement on our career ladder and salary structure will be based on qualifications and experience. Duties: Comply with all UPMC and departmental policies, procedures, and work practices. Demonstrate full proficiency in CoPath software related to Histology workflow. Embed and cut tissue specimens per department protocols, ensuring proper orientation and artifact-free sections. Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining, and coverslipping. Embed and cut specialized tissue, including minute biopsy protocols. Perform quality control checks at each phase of processing and staining. Maintain instruments according to quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols. Perform reagent preparation and daily maintenance of histology instruments and equipment. Conduct inventory of supplies and reagents; order as necessary. Transport and maintain slide workflow throughout the histology process. Organize and label slides, ensuring proper distribution to staff (triage). Perform quality assurance of labels and slides to ensure patient ID integrity. File blocks at the end of the day and maintain the slide filing system. Monitor fax machine and tube system; dispense work to appropriate technicians. Perform ancillary tasks such as filing, cleaning, and stocking supplies. Act as a courteous liaison at the main desk between pathologists, clinicians, residents, and others. Answer telephone calls, direct appropriately, and take messages when needed. Support the academic mission of the department. Assume compliance with hospital philosophy and mission of excellence in all interactions. Perform other duties and assignments as directed by lab leadership. Histology Assistant Education: High school diploma Histology Lab Technician Education: High school diploma Experience: Minimum of 1 year of histology experience Histotechnician Education & Training (must meet one of the following): Successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histology program within the last 5 years Associate’s degree 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, including: 12 semester hours in biology and chemistry Experience (must meet one of the following): 1 year of clinical histology laboratory experience post-training with certification 3 years of experience working as a Histology Lab Technician or equivalent title without certification UPMC is an Equal Opportunity Employer/Disability/Veteran
