QUALIFICATIONS

  • MLS, Ph.D. or MFA from an ALA accredited program
  • Familiarity with library catalogs, EAD finding aids, ArchivesSpace
  • Knowledge of conservation standards
  • Knowledge of procedures used in cleaning, storage, and protection of the collection
  • Knowledge of archival procedures and practices
  • Ability to give clear, concise, and informative talks before professional and nonprofessional groups
  • Ability to supervise the design, preparation, installation, budget and maintenance of displays and exhibits

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift 35 pounds, move books, and push and pull book trucks as required.
  • Must be able to climb ladders up to 14 feet high.

Responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

Oversees the development and management of the Philip Roth Personal Library.
Responsible for exhibit curation, donor cultivation, and promotion of the Roth collection. Processes and generates finding aids for archival materials; develops policies and procedures; preserves and safeguards the collection; schedules researchers, visitors, seminars, and other events; curates exhibit and displays; conducts tours; participates in outreach and donor cultivation events; organizes programs, and does other related duties as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Knowledge of Philip Roth, his work and importance of how Newark is central to his work
  • Performs research to obtain accurate and factual historical data through libraries, newspapers and/or other sources
  • Provide historical information, research services, answering reference questions of varying difficulty
  • Maintains liaison and promotes cooperation with public and private agencies in the community. Establishes and maintains effective work relationships with universities
  • Develops and conducts library programs such as writing and poetry workshops, library tours and educational programs for the purpose of informing the community about the collection
  • Plans, coordinates, and implements lectures, historical demonstration projects and other programs
  • Handles acquisition of donations of archival material related to Philip Roth
  • Prepares news articles about the historical data and highlights of current events.
  • Prepares booklets about the history and highlights of the community, its officials, and significant organizations and institutions.
  • Participates in donor cultivation events
  • Conducts research on collections
  • Facilitates the Philip Roth Book Club held virtually via Zoom
  • Works with the Development Department and hired contractors on the annual Philip Roth Lecture, a signature NPL event
  • Schedules research visits
  • Manages honoraria for speakers and panelists.
  • Determines the content and arrangement of library material for displays, exhibits, and special library programs.
  • Creates finding aids.
  • Manages, promotes, sells and stocks PRPL merchandise for in-person and online sales.
  • Prepares files of historical material.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to collect and analyze extensive historical data.
  • Knowledge of research techniques.
  • Ability to prepare correspondence.
  • Ability to make oral and written presentations.

  • Monitors the security of the collection and shelves and tracks all collections
