The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University. The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution. In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students. Holiday House Checker Job Summary The External Affairs Commission is responsible for external advocacy on behalf of students to the City of Kingston as well as facilitating internal programming and resources that connect Queen’s students to the Kingston community. The External Affairs Commission oversees the House Check program, which employs students who stomp down snow, collect mail, and alert authorities if they observe any suspicious activity in student homes, which helps reduce student concerns about break-ins over winter break and reading weeks. By assigning students to check houses, the program improves the security of student homes. Job Competencies Communication Organization Ownership Attention to Detail Job Duties Perform patrols at properties as indicated by the Housing Resource Centre Manager Collect mail at the appropriate properties Check for break-ins or other suspicious activity at the appropriate properties and report to the Housing Resource Centre Manager Stomp down snow at the appropriate properties Attend all training sessions to become familiar with the department and adhere to the general operations of the department Respect and adhere to all company policies, procedures and ethical standards Maintain timely communication with your direct supervisor Attend and fully participate in all in person and virtual meetings Complete all assigned tasks efficiently and attentively Strive to foster a warm, comfortable and respectful atmosphere for coworkers Always serve as a representative of the AMS and its mission statement Complete other duties as assigned Job Requirements Ability to self-delegate, set expectations and monitor progress of all different assignments Sound analytical thinking, planning and prioritization skills Working Conditions Travelling to various locations Flexible hours including nights, weekends, and holidays Availability during Reading Weeks and Winter Break. Responsibilities
