QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hold an appropriate qualification in a relevant field (e.g. NVQ, Diploma, relevant degree) or have equivalent relevant experience.
  • A good standard of education with English and Maths GCSE grade A–C (or equivalent).

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Experience of interviewing and assessing clients with housing and support needs.
  • Experience of casework and using case management systems effectively.
  • Experience of multi-agency working to achieve positive outcomes for clients.
  • Experience of delivering operational projects to deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong knowledge (or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge) of housing advice, homelessness prevention, property allocation, and choice-based lettings.
Responsibilities

WHAT’S INVOLVED WITH THIS ROLE:

The Homeless Prevention Officer will work proactively with individuals and households to deliver housing options advice, prevent homelessness, and provide statutory assessments under housing legislation. The post-holder will manage a varied caseload, investigating individual circumstances, identifying suitable housing solutions, and ensuring statutory duties are met. This includes supporting clients to access housing, benefits, and other services, while collaborating with partner agencies to secure the best outcomes. The role is key to meeting local and national targets on homelessness prevention, rough sleeping reduction, and tenancy sustainment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide tailored advice and assistance to prevent homelessness, including supporting clients to claim housing and welfare benefits (e.g. DHP).
  • Assess and determine applications from homeless households under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996, discharging statutory duties where appropriate.
  • Manage a caseload effectively, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and quality in record-keeping, case notes, and reports.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of housing legislation, policy, case law, and guidance to ensure statutory compliance.
  • Communicate clearly with clients, colleagues, Elected Members, and partner organisations to manage expectations and deliver effective outcomes.
  • Represent the service at case conferences, meetings, and committees where required.
