Job Details Job Location: Northwest Family YMCA - Irmo, SC 29063 Position Type: Part Time Salary Range: $10.00 - $11.00 Hourly POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. It provides high-quality enrichment, instruction, and supervision to homeschooled youth participating in YMCA homeschool programs. The Homeschool Swim & Gym Instructor is responsible for planning and delivering safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate swim and physical education classes for homeschooled children. This role includes leading structured activities, facilitating social development, maintaining a safe learning environment, and building positive relationships with children and families. The ideal candidate is creative, adaptable, and passionate about youth development. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Lead age-appropriate educational and recreational activities, which may include physical education, STEM, arts, fitness, outdoor learning, or character-building lessons. Foster an inclusive, positive, and engaging environment that encourages curiosity, cooperation, and personal growth. Supervise children to ensure safety, appropriate behavior, and consistent YMCA standards of conduct. Teach water safety, stroke development, and fitness skills following YMCA standards. Support individualized learning needs by offering guidance, encouragement, and differentiated instruction when appropriate. Communicate effectively with parents/guardians, children and other staff. Maintain accurate attendance records, incident reports, and program materials. Assist with program setup, cleanup, and classroom organization. Role-model the YMCA’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum age of 16. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with children, parents, and colleagues. Patience, empathy, and enthusiasm for working with children of diverse backgrounds and abilities. Availability to work flexible hours, as suits the program requirements. Previous experience working with children in a childcare, educational, or recreational setting preferred. Certifications required within 60 days of employment: CPR, First Aid, AED, Oxygen. Ability to complete the following within 30 days of hire: Child Abuse Prevention training; Bloodborne Pathogens and Sexual Harassment training. WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to perform all physical requirements of the position; including walking, standing, bending, reaching and lifting up to 50 lbs. at a time. Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
