Position overview: Capilano Golf and Country Club is currently seeking an experienced Horticulturist to lead the maintenance and enhancement of approximately 4 acres of horticulture areas across the golf course property. The successful candidate will bring creativity, precision, and a strong sense of pride in their work to produce exceptional garden spaces that elevate the member experience. This role offers a high degree of autonomy and the opportunity for personal expression in shaping the aesthetic character of the horticultural areas. Reporting to and working closely with the Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents, the Horticulturist will oversee two assistant seasonal staff members and coordinate all horticultural maintenance activities. This position involves regular interaction with club members and therefore requires excellent communication skills, a professional demeanor, and a service-oriented mindset.
Course Information: Capilano Golf and Country Club is a private 18-hole facility established in 1938 with esteemed Canadian golf course architect Stanley Thompson and is continually ranked in the top 10 golf courses in Canada. Located in West Vancouver, BC the course is surrounded by and has excellent access to the North shore Mountain Range and located only 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-Secondary education in Horticulture or a related field.
  • A professional portfolio is preferred but not required.
  • Possess a B.C. Pesticide Applicators License or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of starting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Valid BC Drivers License or equivalent.

Compensation and Work Schedule:

  • $32.14 / hour, full-time (40 hours per week).
  • 10 to 12 month position with winter work by mutual agreement and based on the skillset and desires of the successful applicant.

Responsibilities
  • Work directly with the management team in the prioritization and scheduling of all horticulture activities.
  • Provide training to and oversee the work of two dedicated Horticulture Assistants and other seasonal staff, related to the general maintenance of the “horticulture areas”.
  • Manage an annual maintenance budget for all aspects of the Horticulture scope of work.
  • Perform a variety of specialized technical tasks related to maintenance, upkeep, species selection, and renovation of approximately 4 acres of “horticulture areas” on the property.
  • Source, purchase, and establish a variety of plant species using native options when possible.
  • Manage the functionality and production of a small greenhouse to propagate plants for use on the course.
  • Aid in the development of an annual management plan for horticulture and naturalized areas.
  • Ensure all work is completed to a high standard of quality and efficiency.
  • Ensure the safe use of equipment, machinery, and materials as it relates to members and staff.
  • Safely apply pre-emergent and selective herbicides as part of an Integrated Pest Management program.
  • Provide written reports, updates, and detailed documentation as needed.
  • Collaborate with the club’s Arborist in areas that overlap arboriculture and horticulture throughout the season.
  • Conduct occasional Horticulture tours for the membership as needed.
  • Be flexible to help with other golf course related tasks as needed throughout the season.
  • Be proactive in pursuing educational opportunities related to horticulture and put that knowledge to practical use.
  • Function as an ambassador of the club with members, guests, and staff.
