Overview The Hospital Coding Specialist at Riverside Healthcare is responsible for accurately coding and abstracting outpatient and Home Health medical records to ensure compliant coding of assigned accounts. This role plays a vital part in achieving appropriate reimbursement, indexing, statistical reporting, and compliance requirements and will demonstrates flexibility with assignments within professional scope/duties/licensure. The Specialist also assists with end-of-month processes, backlog completion, and error reconciliation, including verifying the medical necessity of minor procedures/diagnostics. This position requires the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, effectively prioritize tasks, and shift focus as needed. The ideal candidate will have a customer-focused attitude and professional demeanor in all interactions. Essential Duties Accurately assign and sequence appropriate ICD-10-CM and CPT codes for all diagnoses, procedures, signs, symptoms, and conditions documented in medical records. Participate in the coding of outpatient and Home Health medical records for the purpose of reimbursement, indexing, and statistical reporting. Ensure compliance with all recognized coding guidelines and standards. Assign appropriate modifiers to CPT codes to fully describe the services rendered. Actively participate in end-of-month and backlog reconciliation processes, including verifying the medical necessity of procedures and resolving errors. Enter abstracted data into the Affinity system and verify accuracy of downloaded information. Classify cases into appropriate patient classification systems, such as APC (Ambulatory Payment Classifications) and EAPG (Enhanced Ambulatory Patient Groups). Review and respond to APC, Outpatient Code Editor (OCE), Correct Coding Initiative (CCI), and medical necessity edits identified during the encoder session to ensure compliance and optimize reimbursement. Complete or reassign records within coding queues to reflect the status of each account handled. Verify that all physicians involved in the patient's care are correctly documented in the abstract. Participate in ongoing education and training opportunities to improve coding skills and maintain certification. Non-essential Duties Assist with additional clerical or administrative tasks that may contribute to overall department efficiency but are not directly related to coding and abstracting. Provide general support in special projects or team initiatives when needed. Responsibilities Preferred Experience Strong working knowledge of ICD-10-CM, PCS, and CPT coding principles. Understanding of Official Coding Guidelines. Background in medical terminology, human anatomy/physiology, and disease processes. Knowledge of patient classification systems applicable to daily work (e.g., APCs, EAPGs). Ability to read and write in English. Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and an ability to problem solve effectively. Previous experience with coding in a healthcare setting, particularly involving outpatient and emergency department records, is preferred. Polished communication and customer relations skills to effectively work with other healthcare professionals. Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks effectively. Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in coding and abstracting. Ability to problem solve and verify the accuracy of essential information. Excellent interpersonal skills with a customer-focused attitude and a mature, professional demeanor in all interactions. Required Licensure/Education Current certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), and/or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) is required.
