Volunteers of America-Greater New York (VOA-Greater New York) is an anti-poverty organization working to end homelessness in the New York area by 2050. We operate over 60 programs across New York City, Northern New Jersey and Westchester County including emergency, transitional and permanent housing. Our services extend to families experiencing homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, people living with HIV/AIDS, veterans, youth aging out of foster care, adults with behavioral health or substance use needs, and others in need, including a special education preschool program.

Position: Housing Specialist
The Housing Specialist assures housing readiness of clients by implementing appropriate trainings and developing permanent housing options in both public and private sectors.
Empower Residence is a 24/7 transitional housing program for women, operating under HRA/DSS guidelines. As an enhanced shelter, we support residents facing challenges such as mental health needs, substance use, unemployment, and poverty. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree or 60 college credits courses in Human Services field or High School Diploma or GED with 2 years of related experience in shelter services for low-income and/or homeless population.
  • Knowledge of federal guidelines for public and private low-income housing required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A clean and valid driver’s license is a plus.

Responsibilities
  1. Conduct housing eligibility assessments of all applicable clients.
  2. Develop linkages with real estate companies and office of public housing.
  3. Counsel residents on rent arrears, credit and criminal background checks, NYCHA & current available city subsidies, supportive housing, DGS regulations and related obstacles to securing permanent housing.
  4. Maintain and update listings of permanent affordable housing.
  5. Develop and facilitate client workshops and individual sessions on skills and information necessary to acquire and maintain independent permanent housing.
  6. Track placements and conduct follow up of clients placed into permanent housing.
