HOUSING SUPPORT WORKER

Daytime hours with full benefits. Meaningful work serving clients with mental health and addictions background.
Hours: 40 hours per week.
Benefit plan after three months, and defined benefit pension plan
Position Description:
Reporting to the Housing Coordinator, the Housing Support Worker is primarily responsible for assisting in serving meals to clients in transitional housing at St. Michael’s Homes, as well as assisting clients with primary care tasks e.g. laundry and cleaning of their room in order to aid in their recovery from the impact of addictions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Heats and serves lunch and dinner to residents five days a week
  • Completes daily checklists of food served to residents
  • Stores food safely after serving and manages leftovers for absent residents
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the kitchen and dining area, including the fridges and other appliances for storing food
  • Models best practices in Food Services and articulates these to Food Services Staff and trainees, and other staff and clients
  • Assists residents with day-to-day tasks, such as laundry, cleaning their room and maintaining their personal hygiene.
  • Assists clients with arranging and attending appointments, such as banking or medical, etc.
  • Utilize EMHware to maintain and update client records as needed
  • Ensures the security of the building
  • Providing support to residents through informal counselling and brief intervention
  • Providing support to the Housing team with program tasks as needed
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Experience in Food Services and/or Hospitality
  • Experience and/or education in Peer Support, Personal Support work, and/or Community/Social Service work an asset
  • Possess basic computer skills, specifically in Microsoft 365 environment.
  • Awareness and appreciation of client needs specific to the addictions and mental health field
  • Completion of standard staff training modules
  • Completion of Food Handler Certification

Working Conditions

  • Ability to attend regularly scheduled meetings and engage in impromptu supervisory conversations
  • Ability to stand for long periods of the day
  • Ability to lift at least 30 lbs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with food handling and serving
  • Knowledge of issues related to addiction, concurrent disorder, mental health, trauma and recovery.
  • Knowledge and understanding of community addiction and mental health case management services.
  • Experience with EMHware or electronic records system an asset.
  • Understanding and commitment to health equity, diversity and inclusivity.
  • Experience utilizing various approaches to substance use and recovery.
  • Skilled in managing individuals who are anxious or escalated, including strong crisis de-escalation skills.
  • Experience and skills working with individuals affected by poverty, violence, homelessness, institutionalization (incarceration), stigma, racism and/or homophobia/transphobia.
  • Knowledge of the impact of social/cultural/economic factors on the determinants of health.
  • Knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to the complexity of issues arising for individuals who have experienced homelessness, addictions, poverty and/or mental illness.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across interdisciplinary teams and community partners.
  • Ability to work with clients presenting with a wide range of mental health issues.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, sound judgment, initiative and creativity.
