  • A strong understanding of Post-Secondary Sector is considered an asset.

Education and Experience:

  • 5+ years of progressive generalist or advisory experience in HR.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant working experience as an HR Business Partner, including engagement, employee relations, performance management, coaching, policy development, and legal compliance.
  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Organizational Behaviour, Education, Leadership, Business, or equivalent.
  • CPHR, CHRP or CHRL is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of employment statutes and principles of employment law and HR best practices.
  • Prior experience working in both unionized and non-unionized environments as a HR Business Partner or in a similar role.
  • Knowledge and experience of post-secondary institution practices are considered strong assets.

Responsibilities:

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Reporting to the Associate Director, Human Resources, the HRBP - Faculty Relations provides strategic expertise on faculty relations and full life-cycle HR matters. This role involves policy interpretation, faculty engagement, faculty (employee) relations, leadership coaching, succession planning, performance management and internal investigations. The HRBP will also manage relationships with academic leaders, administrators, faculty, lecturers, and instructors. The ability to communicate effectively, resolve problems strategically, and collaborate across a variety of teams, departments, and situations is essential. High interpersonal and organizational skills are required in this position.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

The HRBP - Faculty Relations will, at various times, be responsible for the following as well as other related duties as assigned to support UCW’s business objectives, mission, and purpose:

  • Provide guidance and coaching to Program Chairs and Deans on a variety of subjects concerning employment matters of faculty and instructors and performance management.
  • Develop policies and procedures governing faculty employment.
  • Act as a senior advisor to the Vice President Academics (VPA) and Deans on faculty relations matters.
  • Coach Program Chairs and other academic leaders on appropriate actions and solutions for all employment issues pertaining to faculty.
  • Respond to faculty concerns, keeping Program Chairs, Deans and VPA informed.
  • Anticipate and address future developments in faculty relations.
  • Provide guidance on interpretation, compliance, and administration of university policies and employment legislation.
  • Manage complaints and disputes, facilitating resolution among stakeholders.
  • Effectively investigate and implement resolutions on workplace issues to minimize risk to the university and mitigate and resolve disputes prior to formal hearings where possible.
  • Collects and maintains case tracking system for investigations and faculty relations incidents.
  • Advise on disciplinary actions, assisting in drafting responses.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with academic leaders and faculty.
  • Participate in the faculty committee meetings as an HR representative.
  • Consult with external legal counsel as needed.

Project Based Assignments:

  • Lead projects related to performance management, executive coaching, and leadership development.
  • Develop and deliver information sessions, training, and orientation for faculty and Program Chairs.
  • Support in analysis and recommendations related to job satisfaction, compensation, and retention.
