Description

With the office based in the southern suburbs of Brisbane, join a fast-growing Tier 3 construction company on a major upward trajectory with a reputation for design innovation, operational excellence and genuine team culture.

This is an opportunity for an experienced HR Manager to take ownership of the complete people and payroll function within a growing $60 million construction business.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you will manage everything from workforce planning, recruitment and employee relations through to end-to-end payroll, award interpretation and compliance.

It is a hands-on, standalone position for someone who enjoys being close to the workforce, supporting managers and making sure the fundamentals are handled accurately and consistently.

The Company:

This established construction business turns over approximately $60 million annually and is continuing to grow.

Based on Brisbane’s southside, the company has developed a strong pipeline of work and is investing in its people, systems and operational capability to support further growth.

The culture is practical and fast-moving. Senior leaders remain close to the operation, decisions can be made quickly and the successful HR Manager will have direct access to the Managing Director.

This is a full-time, office-based position.

The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Managing Director, you will manage the day-to-day HR and payroll requirements of the business while contributing to longer-term workforce planning, engagement and people initiatives.

You will act as the primary point of contact for employee relations matters and provide managers with practical advice across performance, conduct, grievances and workplace compliance.

The role also has full responsibility for payroll. You will process pay runs, interpret awards and employment arrangements, manage statutory obligations and resolve payroll queries.

This is not a role where HR strategy is separated from delivery. You must be comfortable developing policies and advising leadership while also preparing contracts, maintaining employee records and ensuring each payroll cycle is accurate and on time.

Why this role stands out:

  • Take ownership of the complete HR and payroll function
  • Report directly to the Managing Director
  • Influence workforce planning, engagement and people strategy
  • Work across the entire employee lifecycle
  • Become the trusted HR adviser to operational managers
  • Improve HR systems, policies and processes
  • Join a growing construction business with approximately $60 million turnover
  • Work in an environment where practical advice is valued
  • Gain broad exposure across office, construction and operational employees

Key responsibilities:

  • Implement HR strategies covering workforce planning, performance and employee engagement
  • Coach managers on performance, employee relations and workplace compliance
  • Monitor legislative changes and maintain compliant policies and employment contracts
  • Manage end-to-end recruitment, onboarding and offboarding
  • Prepare employment contracts, position descriptions and onboarding documentation
  • Coordinate apprenticeships, training records, RTO requirements and QLeave administration
  • Oversee performance reviews, goal setting and employee development
  • Manage end-to-end payroll, including pay runs, reconciliations and reporting
  • Interpret awards, employment contracts and individual arrangements
  • Ensure the correct payment of wages, allowances, penalties and leave entitlements
  • Maintain compliance with STP, superannuation, payroll tax and leave reporting
  • Resolve payroll queries and maintain data integrity across HR and payroll systems
  • Act as the primary contact for employee relations matters
  • Advise managers on performance, misconduct, grievances and workplace concerns
  • Lead employee investigations while ensuring procedural fairness
  • Prepare employment letters, warnings and outcomes
  • Maintain accurate, compliant and audit-ready employee records
  • Improve HR systems, processes, policies and reporting
  • Train employees and managers on HR platforms and processes
  • Support Quality, Environmental and WHS compliance

Requirements:

  • Experience as an HR Manager, HR and Payroll Manager or senior HR generalist
  • Proven experience managing end-to-end payroll
  • Strong generalist HR capability across the complete employee lifecycle
  • Experience managing employee investigations and corrective actions
  • Strong knowledge of the Fair Work Act and Australian employment legislation
  • Ability to interpret modern awards, employment contracts and individual arrangements
  • Knowledge of STP, superannuation, payroll tax and leave entitlements
  • Experience supporting performance management, grievances and terminations
  • Ability to coach and support operational managers
  • Experience preparing contracts, policies and employment correspondence
  • Strong attention to detail and payroll accuracy
  • Experience with HRIS and payroll systems such as Employment Hero, MYOB, Xero or SAP
  • Strong Excel and general business-system capability
  • Excellent communication, planning and organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to the wider business
  • Diploma in Management, Human Resources or a related discipline
