ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO), the HR Manager will lead two HR professionals, supporting the University of North Carolina System Office and its non-campus affiliates in aligning HR practices with organizational goals. The position involves working closely with management on employee relations, overseeing payroll, time and leave, compensation and position compliance, and ensuring adherence to laws and policies. Key responsibilities include:

  • Responding to and addressing requests from managers and employees to enhance daily HR effectiveness
  • Leading and mentoring two HR Business Partners, providing guidance on complex issues
  • Addressing performance management and employee relations concerns and promoting a positive workplace
  • Ensuring compliance with current federal and state employment laws and regulations
  • Analyzing HR data to inform decision-making
  • Collaborating with managers to develop talent strategies that enhance team effectiveness
  • Building strong relationships with internal stakeholders and HR team members to provide tailored talent solutions

This position is a hybrid work arrangement and will work at least 3 days per week at the Dillon building in downtown Raleigh’s Warehouse District. UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina, within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS

Graduation from a four-year college or university and at least seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, communicating and promoting HR best practices; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS

Experience in a higher education setting, particularly the UNC System, with in-depth knowledge of all HR systems/programs, particularly in employee relations and/or performance management. Preference will be given to candidates with experience supporting multiple departments and/or units within a School/College/Unit with an understanding of confidentiality and a thorough knowledge of UNC policies and procedures for BOTH SHRA and EHRA positions. Management/leadership experience is highly preferred.
