JOB SUMMARY:

The HR Specialist supports payroll, benefits, and human resources functions for a growing school district.
This role ensures accurate and timely payroll processing, benefits administration, and employee record management,
while providing excellent customer service to staff and compliance with state and federal requirements.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Accounting, Finance, HR, or Business Administration preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with payroll processing, including wage/salary calculations, payroll taxes, and benefit deductions.
  • Knowledge of Iowa School finance (uniform financial accounting experience preferred).
  • Familiarity with employee benefits administration, carrier reconciliation, and compliance reporting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, payroll systems, and human resources platforms (Software Unlimited, Frontline preferred).
  • Strong organizational, mathematical, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a customer-service mindset.
  • Strong work ethic and detail-oriented.
  • Takes the initiative to problem-solve and provide constructive solutions while maintaining positive working relationships

  • Lifting, carrying, pushing up to 10-40 pounds on occasion
  • Requires some stooping and kneeling
  • Must be able to sit upright in a desk chair for 7-8 hours per day
  • Must be able to perform data entry at a computer workstation for 7-8 hours per da

Responsibilities

Payroll & Timekeeping

  • Enters and maintains employee salary and wage data in the payroll system.
  • Reviews Frontline timesheets weekly; communicates discrepancies to supervisors in coordination with the business department staff.
  • Cross-checks absences, timecards, overtime, and deductions for accuracy.
  • Prepares and distributes monthly payroll and overtime reports for the Business Manager.
  • Reviews deductions and ensures accuracy each payroll cycle.
  • Prepares and submits monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
  • Responsible for Employee W-2’s, Social Security verifications and 1095’s.

Benefits Administration

  • Processes deductions in the payroll system, manages, reviews and approves employee benefit changes for health, dental, vision, life, LTD, cafeteria plan, and HSA benefits.
  • Serves as IPERS Reporting Official.
  • Reviews insurance invoices, reconciles payroll deductions, and communicates discrepancies to the Business Manager.
  • Connects employees with district and vendor resources for benefit inquiries, eligibility, coverage issues.
  • Maintains employee benefit and insurance records.
  • Supports benefits orientation for new hires and assists with annual open enrollment.

Human Resources Support

  • Supports onboarding for employees.
  • Assists the business office with employee contracts and letters of assignment.
  • Ability to respond promptly to employee questions in a fast-paced environment.

  • At-Will, Non-Exempt Employee
  • 12-month position (260 days, 8 hours/day)
