Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, management, public administration, human resources or related field; or equivalent or a combination of education and relevant experience.
- 3-5 years human resources experience, preferably in an academic environment.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, correctly, knowledgeably, and effectively both verbally and in writing, to different audiences.
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, complete tasks without immediate supervision, and work with senior leaders to accomplish goals with the ability to lead and train
- Proven ability to develop relationships and build partnerships with internal teams.
- Collaborates with managers and supervisors to develop best practices to help people develop.
- Broad and deep HR technical expertise in all facets of HR including employment and recruiting, compensation, performance management, employee relations, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret, explain and apply HR policies, state and federal regulations and protocols
- Strong facilitation abilities (large and small group)
- Outstanding customer service skills and a high degree of professionalism
- Ability to exercise strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment and to set and meet deadlines, organize workload, and juggle changing priorities
- Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately and with discretion
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with varied audiences.
- Demonstrated proficiency with business applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite or Google Suite, and human resources information systems.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or the commitment to do so at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications
- PHR or SPHR certification
- Previous academic human resources or academic library HR experience
- Knowledge of Banner and Cornerstone applications
The position is located on the Monroe Park campus, but the position requires frequent travel to VCU’s MCV campus, the location of the Health Sciences Library. This is not a remote position.

Responsibilities:
The Human Resources Business Partner will be a key player in driving HR strategies, working to ensure alignment with organizational and university goals, and enhancing the overall experience for employees and managers of VCU Libraries. The HR Business Partner contributes to the execution and delivery of effective HR strategies, services and programs. Through collaboration and relationship building, the HR Business Partner works with internal stakeholders and works to identify critical issues and/or gaps and proposes and implements changes designed to support the goals of VCU Libraries. In addition to core HR functions, this role places strong emphasis on project management, HRIS systems proficiency and the ability to develop and deliver effective training programs to stakeholders.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Organizational Development (AD/OD), the HR Business Partner is responsible for daily operations of the human resources functions for more than 120 full-time employees, including Teaching and Research Faculty, Classified and University and Academic Professional employees, as well as approximately 100 student assistants and hourly employees. Responsibilities will include employee relations, performance management, recruitment, and learning and development.
Responsibilities:
The HRBP oversees and manages day-to-day critical operations of the Libraries Human Resources department, including staff and faculty recruitment, onboarding and offboarding, learning and development, performance management, and employee relations. The HRBP coaches leaders to collaboratively determine the best solutions regarding performance issues, change management, conflict resolution, and ensuring alignment with the Libraries mission and values and our strategic framework. The successful candidate will partner with managers and supervisors to develop HR strategies to support the organization.
Duties include:
- Serves as subject matter expert for HR policies and procedures in order to respond in an accurate and timely manner from managers and staff.
- Provides guidance and expertise on confidential and complex matters, including faculty contract development and execution; performance management and employee relations issues.
- Identify organizational needs of the Libraries and plan, resource and execute programs and strategies to address areas identified either directly or through strategic partnership and collaboration with experts across the University
- Identify, plan, and execute process improvement projects to increase efficiency and effectiveness of HR programs
- Oversees and/or approves human resources transactions submitted for processing. Serves as Libraries Timekeeper; ensures accurate and timely recordkeeping practices. Prepares reports, and analyzes data available through local and centralized database resources.
- Firm understanding and knowledge of VCU benefits. Oversees processes for workers’ compensation, disability, leave, workplace accommodation requests, and health and safety issues; consult with managers, and AD/OD as needed. Oversees the accurate documentation and recordkeeping.
- Ensures data tracking and reporting for exit interviews, turnover, and other areas.
- Builds credible relationships with employees, managers, and supervisors through trust, collaboration, and effective communication.
- Advises staff and managers on classification and compensation matters, including but not limited to the review and/or updating of current job classifications and career ladders.
- Ability to conduct activities and make decisions according to ethical standards.
- May coach employees on a variety of employment matters, such as workplace concerns, grievances, etc.
- May conduct workplace investigations and consult with AD/OD to provide solutions to workplace issues.
- Serves as Human Resources Professional for VCU Libraries and works collaboratively with Central Human Resources to provide high-impact HR solutions for Libraries employees.
- Participates in the VCU HR community by attending HR Professional Committee meetings, career community events, and VCU HR trainings for HR Professionals
- Works collaboratively with the Budget Director and Libraries Fiscal Office to provide information and ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Oversees annual staff performance management process.
- Compiles and maintains human resources reports and statistics for external constituencies.
