Job Details Job Location: Maryville College - Maryville, TN Salary Range: Undisclosed Description Position Title: Human Resources Generalist I (Part-Time Temporary) Department: Human Resources Title of Immediate Supervisor/Leader to Whom This Position Reports: Director of Human Resources *Expected Daily Work Hours: 8:00am – 4:00pm *Expected Weekly Work Schedule: Monday – Friday * College offices are normally open from 8:00 AM until 5:00PM, Monday through Friday. However, due to the nature of responsibility to the student body, individual offices or departments may have operating hours that extend beyond this period and may include evening or weekend hours. Non-exempt employees will normally work 8 hours per day. Overtime (any hours in excess of 40 per week) for non-exempt employees is required to be approved, in advance by the department supervisor. Exempt employees will typically work at least 40 hours per week and such additional time as may be reasonably required to fulfill the obligations of their position description. Such additional work may include evenings and weekends and should be described in this document. This role helps ensure smooth daily operations of the HR office while handling a wide range of sensitive employee and student information with a high degree of confidentiality. The position is temporary and part-time (20–25 hours per week) with the potential for extension. Minimum Qualifications Required: (please be specific and respond to every question; indicate none if not applicable) Education required to ensure success in this position: Bachelor’s Degree in human resources, business administration, psychology or other related field, required. Experience required to ensure success in this position: 2+ years’ experience in human resources, preferably in a higher education or non-profit setting. Special skills, knowledge and abilities: Analytical and problem-solving skills Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively in a team setting. Strong organizational skills with capacity to set priorities. Ability to work independently. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Strong time-management skills. Business skills: business writing, computer/information systems, and presentation skills. Ability to utilize Microsoft Office, Paycom or other ATS and payroll systems, a plus. License, certification, or registration necessary: PHR or SHRM CP, preferred Physical requirements: Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds Occasionally lift/carry up to 25lbs Environmental condition Professional office environment with interruptions and noise due to frequent visitors and callers Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment: Standard office equipment: computer, phone, etc. Primary duties and responsibilities (Typically ~7 primary duties comprised of 80% of the responsibilities): To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Serve as the first point of contact for HR inquiries and office visitors; maintain HR inbox and office communications with a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Support student employment processes, including position descriptions, recruitment, onboarding, payroll, and compliance tracking, while ensuring accurate handling of sensitive student information. Assist with new hire orientation and onboarding activities, maintaining discretion in all aspects of employee data and processes. Maintain accurate personnel files and HRIS data entry, safeguarding confidential employee and student records. Provide payroll and timekeeping support, including assisting supervisors with timecard approvals and preparing student payroll, while adhering to privacy and compliance requirements. Conduct background checks for students, volunteers, and provide back-up for employee checks, ensuring the secure handling of personal information. Serve as back-up to HR Generalist II in recruitment and onboarding and to the Payroll & Benefits Specialist in payroll processes, with attention to confidentiality and accuracy. Perform other duties as assigned to support HR operations, uphold confidentiality and trust in all HR practices. Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students.
