Description:
Reporting to the Director, Human Resources and taking day-to-day direction and guidance from the Human Resources Consultants, the Human Resources (HR) Generalist will assist with the facilitation of all HR functions and programs. The HR Generalist will act as lead with the recruitment and orientation process and will provide support for human resource programs and initiatives such as, the administration of NOSM University Collective Agreements, health and safety, compensation, and employee relations. The HR Generalist will provide HR guidance and expertise to staff within the scope of this position, referring matters of a more complex nature to the HR Consultants.
EDUCATION
- A University degree in a related discipline (HR, business administration) from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation.
- A CHRP designation from the Human Resources Professional Association of Ontario is considered an asset.
- Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Certification is considered an asset.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- A minimum of three (3) years of related experience in human resources.
- Previous experience in the public sector, in a medical or educational setting preferred.
- Experience working in a unionized environment preferred.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and employment programs (ie. Employment Standards, WSIB, EI, Labour Relations Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act).
- Knowledge of principles and practices of human resources management and of best practices and professional standards in the field of human resources, labour relations and organizational development.
- Knowledge health and safety and recruitment and selection process.
- Knowledge of HRIS programs (Colleague).
- Ability to interpret and apply applicable human resources policies, procedures, legislation and collective agreements.
- Proficiency in software programs with formatting/utility capabilities of word processing (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint).
- Ability to coordinate tasks under tight deadlines.
- The ability to communicate effectively and to express oneself clearly verbally, in writing, and a variety of media.
- Work within established organizational practices, protocols and policies.
Responsibilities:
- Leads the recruitment and selection of unionized and non-unionized administrative staff, ensuring HR policies and procedures are followed and in compliance with applicable legislation (i.e. Collective Agreement, Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act, etc.), escalating to the HR Consultants as required.
- Drafts policies and procedures, prepares bargaining documents, grievance materials and tracking, conducts surveys and performing other research activities, as directed.
- Researches and provides analytical support on labour relations and human resources issues in preparation for situations such as grievances, bargaining, accommodation of disability, and in order to recommend and implement changes to human resources policies and processes.
- Assist with management of the Health and Safety program, including participating as a certified member of the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, participating in workplace inspections, recommending updates to H&S related policies and procedures.
- Provides research and recommendations to the HR Consultants on project-based work such as job evaluation process, employee recognition and years of service awards, performance excellence, training and development, policy re-fresh, etc.
- Assists with the maintenance of the HRIS system (inputs employee and position information) monitors and recommends changes, generates statistical data/reports and provides training to new hires.
- Provides research and support in the management of the administrative functions of the Unit 1 Collective Agreement (Scholarship, PD Funds, Paramedical Claims, Annual Reports, Leaves, Salary Increases, Appointment Letters and Negotiation Preparations).
- Coordinates and delivers the onboarding and orientation program for NOSM University employees, in collaboration with hiring supervisors.
- Gathers, analyzes data and provides reports to the HR Consultant and Director, as needed
- Participates on various committees, as required.
- Performs other duties as required.
