POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Human Resources Generalist plays a critical role in the Human Resources department by delivering a wide spectrum of HR responsibilities in a union environment, including labour relations, recruitment and onboarding, performance management, compliance, health and safety and training and development.
The HR Generalist serves as a resource to ensure HR policies, procedures, and initiatives are understood and consistently applied to support a positive work environment.

EDUCATION

At SEIU Healthcare, we understand that the best people do not always have the same access and opportunities to education, and while post-secondary education is always preferred, we want to make sure nothing stands in the way of finding the right person.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • 1-3 years of Human Resources experience, focusing on generalist duties.
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Experience in workplace investigations and employee relations.
  • HR Certification preferred (e.g., HRPA – CHRA, CHRL, PHR).

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with employees, managers, and stakeholders.
  • Problem-solving: Ability to identify and resolve HR-related issues, providing guidance and support to employees and managers.
  • Organization and Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build relationships, foster teamwork, and mediate conflicts.
  • Knowledge of HR Practices and Employment Law: Understanding of HR principles, best practices, and relevant employment laws.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and HR information systems.

Responsibilities
  • Recruitment and Selection: Managing the recruitment process including creating job postings, screening candidates, conducting interviews and managing onboarding process.
  • Health and Safety: Promoting a safe and healthy work environment, participating in accident and workplace investigations and ensuring compliance with workplace safety regulations.
  • Performance Management: Implementing and administering performance management programs, providing guidance to managers on performance issues and supporting employees in performance improvement plans.
  • Policy Development and Implementation: Developing, updating and implementing HR policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and the collective agreement.
  • Employee Relations: Building positive relationships with employees and union representatives, addressing employee concerns. Handling of grievances and workplace investigations.
  • Compliance: Ensuring compliance with all relevant employment legislation.
  • HR Events: Plan and execute HR related events, including employee recognition programs, training sessions and team-building activities.
  • HR Technology: Maintain and manage the HR information System (HRIS) to ensure accurate records; analyze HR data to generate reports and provide insights for decision-making.
  • Other duties as assigned.
