Description

The Human Resources Manager (HRM) serves as a strategic consultant to leaders and teams within High Point University, with a dedicated focus on supporting various academic service lines. This position will lead and influence HR initiatives in the areas of talent acquisition, performance management, employee relations, and organizational development. The HR Manager will serve as a key liaison between the University Human Resources Department and the academic service lines, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and compliance with university policies, employment laws, and accreditation-related requirements specific to healthcare and academic environments.
The HRM will work collaboratively with specialists in Benefits, Payroll, and HRIS to provide comprehensive support to various academic service lines’ faculty, staff, and clinical personnel, ensuring an exceptional employee experience in both academic and clinical settings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field required.

Experience and Training

  • Five plus years of broad HR practitioner experience in a customer-focused environment to include employment, benefits, payroll, employee relations, and maintenance of human resources/payroll data.
  • Professional Human Resources experience in Higher Education preferred
  • Minimum of five years of progressive HR generalist or HRBP experience in a customer-focused, fast-paced environment.
  • Experience supporting healthcare, higher education, or academic medical centers strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with faculty and clinical hiring processes, credentialing, and academic appointment practices is a plus.
  • Workday HRIS experience is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Participates in the development and implementation of human resource strategies that support school accreditation, employee engagement, and workforce planning.
  • Collaborates with leadership to assess organizational needs, workforce challenges, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Serves as the primary HR contact for faculty, staff, and administrators in the Workman School of Dental Medicine, HPU Health, and School of Optometry, managing employee data entry and maintenance in HR systems, including initial setup of positions and departments
  • Provides expert guidance, support, and oversight to client departments, employees, applicants, and the public regarding HR documentation, procedures, and inquiries, ensuring timely resolution and adherence to policies.
  • Collaborates with hiring managers and academic leadership to support faculty and staff recruitment, onboarding, and orientation, including clinical roles, by providing guidance on the interview and selection process, ensuring effective use of the online application system, and ensuring compliance with hiring policies and procedures.
  • Processes hiring requests from managers in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring job postings are correctly formatted, compliant with applicable policies and regulations, and posted in the HPU Career Center.
  • Prepares and issues job offer letters with appropriate language, initiates pre-employment background checks, and communicates new hire information to relevant departments.
  • Delivers and supports HR orientation sessions and training specific to the various academic service lines as needed.
  • Assist with compliance in credentialing, licensure verification, and background check requirements for clinical faculty and clinical staff.
  • Maintains Form I-9 files and documentation; verifies employment eligibility for potential HPU employees; monitors and communicates with non-citizens as to expiration dates and updating of employment authorizations.
  • Advises on university policies, leave programs, FMLA, ADA accommodations, Workers’ Compensation, safety, and employee relations matters.
  • Provides guidance on performance management, professional development, and corrective action processes.
  • Guide unit leaders and managers on coaching performance for reviews and providing feedback
  • Supports benefits education and communication for new and existing employees.
  • Processes job, supervisor, and compensation changes in HR systems; notifies departmental supervisors upon approval and data entry; and prepares employee letters to communicate updates to position title or salary.
  • Partners with colleagues within the Office of Human Resources to maintain accurate employee records and support payroll, benefits, and HRIS updates.
  • Assists with research, data extraction, and analysis for the Office of Human Resources by managing HRIS records, troubleshooting and resolving data issues, conducting regular audits, and generating accurate reports using Excel.
  • Monitors and audits HR data for accuracy and compliance, particularly for roles tied to regulatory or accreditation requirements.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and accreditation standards applicable to higher education and clinical work environments.
  • Coordinates resolutions or referral of policy and procedural issues while recommending new approaches to continuously improve departmental efficiency and services.
  • Fosters a positive work environment by demonstrating effective communication and leadership with faculty, staff, colleagues, and management.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, which will require travel between university campuses and clinical sites.
  • Coordinates with the Office of Human Resources and Academic Affairs on contract renewals for faculty members.
  • Oversees the lifecycle of the faculty and staff from pre-boarding to off-boarding.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Under limited supervision, the Human Resources Manager ensures efficient and compliant administration of HR services tailored to the unique needs of various academic service lines while supporting university-wide HR initiatives.
  • Reports to the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources.
