Description
Description About Sun Title Sun Title Agency of Michigan is a people-first title insurance company operating across 11 Michigan markets with 100 employees. We are the “YES” company - when others hit roadblocks, we find solutions. We advocate for our people and treat every employee interaction as an opportunity to demonstrate that we genuinely care. We are not looking for a theorist. We are looking for a practitioner - someone who takes deep pride in getting payroll right, making benefits enrollment seamless, and being the trusted person an employee calls when something hard is happening in their life. If you measure your success by whether the people you serve feel genuinely taken care of, this role was built for you. You are not walking into chaos. Sun Title’s HR systems, payroll processes, compensation schedules, and benefits programs are in good shape. You are inheriting a well-functioning operation and an early-career HR Specialist who needs a strong mentor. Your job is to own this function with pride, execute it with precision, and be the trusted human behind every process. Position Summary The HR Manager owns the full spectrum of HR administration — payroll processing in Paylocity, benefits coordination, compliance, employee relations, performance management, and onboarding — while serving as the primary trusted advisor for employees and managers navigating sensitive situations. You will report directly to the President and directly supervise the HR Specialist. Key Responsibilities: Payroll & Compensation • Own end-to-end payroll processing for 100 employees in Paylocity with a goal of zero-error accuracy • Process all payroll changes — new hires, terminations, salary adjustments, garnishments, and deductions — accurately and on time • Serve as the primary Paylocity system administrator and maintain data integrity across all employee records • Build and maintain an HR dashboard tracking payroll accuracy, response times, and organizational health metrics Benefits & Retirement Administration • Serve as the primary employee-facing resource for all benefits questions — Priority Health medical, Delta Dental, EyeMed vision, Mutual of Omaha life and disability, and Health Equity HSA • Manage open enrollment communications and employee education across all locations with clarity and warmth • Administer 401(k) enrollment and compliance, workers’ compensation claims, FMLA administration, and leave tracking Employee Relations & Onboarding • Serve as the go-to trusted advisor for employees navigating personal challenges, workplace conflicts, or sensitive situations — with impeccable discretion • Design and own a world-class onboarding experience that confirms from day one that new hires made the right choice • Support managers through difficult employee situations, progressive discipline, and performance improvement — coaching without taking over • Manage all employment separations with professionalism, compassion, and legal compliance Compliance, Performance & HR Administration • Ensure full compliance with federal and Michigan employment law • Maintain and update the employee handbook, job descriptions, and HR policies • Administer Sun Title’s performance review and compensation review cycle in Paylocity • Optimize Paylocity and the Sun Title intranet as intuitive, up-to-date resources for employees Leadership & Branch Visibility • Directly supervise, mentor, and develop the HR Specialist - modeling the service standards, discretion, and work ethic you expect • Accompany leadership on quarterly visits to all 11 Michigan branch locations and build genuine relationships across the organization Requirements Required • 5+ years of progressive HR experience with direct payroll processing and benefits administration responsibility • Hands-on HRIS experience — Paylocity preferred but not required • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and Michigan employment law and HR compliance requirements • Proven ability to handle sensitive employee relations matters with discretion, empathy, and sound judgment • Experience managing or mentoring junior HR staff • Exceptional organizational skills and outstanding interpersonal communication — warm, direct, and trusted at every level Preferred • PHR or SHRM-CP certification • Experience in a multi-location organization (75–150 employees) • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field Character Requirements (Non-Negotiable) Sun Title’s culture is built on genuine care, solutions-first thinking, and showing up for people. The right candidate will naturally embody: • Absolute discretion — employees must trust that what they share stays safe • Responsive by nature — closes the loop on every open item without being asked • Ego-free service orientation — measures success by employee satisfaction, not HR philosophy • Warm, approachable — the kind of person employees want to call when something is hard • Executes the fundamentals with pride — payroll accuracy and benefits clarity are the point • Energized by a fast-paced environment and by bringing people together
