The HVAC Brazer is responsible for cutting, assembling, brazing, and/or soldering: copper, brass, stainless steel, carbon steel, and other tubing for HVAC systems. The role involves using flame torches to join refrigeration piping, ensuring leak-free connections while maintaining high-quality standards.

SKILLS REQUIRED

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in oxy-acetylene/oxy-propane brazing/oxy-natural gas brazing.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and assembly instructions.
  • Understanding of heat transfer, thermal expansion, and metal joining techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIRED

Education & Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED (required).
  • Technical diploma or certification in HVAC, including brazing/soldering.
  • 2+ years of experience in brazing in an HVAC or manufacturing setting.

Certifications (Preferred but Not Required):

  • Brazing Certification (TSSA or equivalent)
  • HVAC Certification (recognized college or technical school)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Training

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, and work in confined spaces.
  • Comfortable working in hot environments due to torch use.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and steady hands for precision brazing.
Responsibilities

Brazing:

  • Brazing operations for refrigeration systems will join the following material using the appropriate brazing filler material: copper to copper, copper to brass, copper to stainless steel.
  • Brazing will use the following gases: oxy-acetylene, oxy-propane, or oxy-ng torches.
  • HVAC brazers apply standard brazing techniques to prevent oxidation, including nitrogen purging while brazing and/or soldering to create strong/clean/leak-free braze joints.

Assembly & Fabrication:

  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and work instructions to assemble HVAC units.
  • Cut, fit, and join refrigerant lines, condensers, evaporators, and compressors as required.
  • Ensure brazed joints meet company and industry standards (e.g., ASME, AHRI, NFPA, CSA, or UL).

Quality Control & Testing:

  • Conduct visual inspections and pressure tests (e.g., nitrogen leak tests) to verify leak-free joints.
  • Identify and repair defects, leaks, or poor connections before system assembly.
  • Maintain high-quality workmanship in compliance with HVAC industry standards.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Follow all workplace safety procedures, including PPE use, and proper handling of torches, gases, and metals.
  • Adhere to all provincial and industry safety standards for brazing and welding operations.
  • Keep workstations organized, clean, and free from fire hazards.

Equipment Maintenance:

  • Maintain, clean, and inspect torches, hoses, tanks, and brazing tools on a daily basis.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of compressed gases and flux materials.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions to supervisors.
