Position: Hydraulic Structures Specialist
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Qualifications: Master’s degree in Civil Eng. (Hydraulic Structures specialization)
Experience: 10+ years (Design of large-scale hydraulic structures engineering projects. Knowledge in basic hydraulic design for structures, experience in dam design and monitoring)
As part of Tractebel’s ongoing development of its Water activities in Australia, we are looking for a Hydraulic Structures Specialist to support our growing operations in Melbourne.
The role involves contributing to technical studies related to hydraulic structures—including dams, hydropower plants, tunnels, intakes, and spillways. In addition to technical responsibilities, the position plays a key role in facilitating coordination between local clients and Tractebel’s global engineering teams, whose main operations are located outside Australia.
Strong communication skills and a good understanding of client expectations will be essential to ensure effective project delivery and stakeholder alignment.

Reporting to the Tractebel Australia Head and relevant Project Managers across Tractebel entities, and supported by subject matter experts from our global offices, the key responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the primary technical point of contact for clients on matters related to the design of hydraulic structures.
  • Leading or supporting the development of technical studies locally, including preparation of reports, calculation notes, and technical memos.
  • Reviewing and validating specific project deliverables as required.
  • Participating in and leading internal and external technical meetings with clients and partners, addressing technical, administrative, and contractual matters in coordination with the Project Manager.
  • Organizing and contributing to technical workshops related to project topics.
  • Coordinating effectively between client requirements and Tractebel’s design teams, distinguishing which topics can be handled locally and which require input or validation from central engineering teams.
  • Conducting occasional site visits for inspections, as needed.

In addition to the core technical responsibilities, the role will also involve contributing to the development of Tractebel’s activities in Australia, including:

  • Supporting the Business Development team by participating in client meetings, building relationships with partners, and promoting Tractebel’s technical expertise across various domains.
  • Assisting in bid preparation, including the development of technical methodologies and estimating effort and timelines for specific tasks.

KEY SKILLS:

  • Able to work independently on moderately complex tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Technically curious and eager to engage with complex engineering challenges.
  • Experienced in liaising with engineers, technical experts, clients, and project stakeholders.

  • Flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Collaborative team player with sound judgment and initiative
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Fluent in English with good written & verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to function in teams spread across different geographies.
