Description
Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. To provide technical expertise in the areas of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Industrial Hygiene (IH) and perform a range of activities including identifying, evaluating and mitigating hazards and risks in the organization to protect employees, contractors, passengers and the public. What will I be doing? Provides technical expertise in health, hygiene and safety to protect employees and contractors from associated health hazards (e.g. asbestos, silica, noise, diesel exhaust) and identifies, evaluates and provides guidance to mitigate hazardous conditions and practices. Participates in project planning and execution of divisional initiatives from the perspective of health and hygiene. Identifies occupational health and safety related trends and provides internal education and support to business units, where required. Performs identification, monitoring and evaluation of hazards and risks throughout the organization, either by observation or direct sampling (i.e. noise sampling or exposure monitoring) and takes appropriate action or escalates as required. Assesses construction-related risks and provides guidance/recommendations for safe management of hazards (e.g. respiratory protection). Supports the investigation of incidents/accidents on construction sites by providing technical expertise. Assists with initiating/managing sampling projects (e.g. hygiene surveys), including developing the scope of work/preparing proposals, executing plans, evaluating results (e.g. compliance with occupational health and hygiene requirements and best practices), recommending course of action (e.g. rental of speciality equipment to conduct sampling), and generating reports. Conducts hygiene audits on contractors’ activities/practices to ensure compliance with hygiene regulatory requirement and best practices. Liaises with employees/integrated contractors to communicate/explain the nature of the hazards (i.e. through presentations, memos, reports and/or information sessions), the potential for risk, and the appropriate methods of control to mitigate hazards and help advance a culture of health and safety across the organization. Works in collaboration with Facilitators to support/provide input into training programs/courses. Supports other business units in the organization as it relates to hygiene, as required. Responds to Ministry of Labour inquiries related to hygiene. Maintains current knowledge of health, hygiene and safety methods, technologies, and best practices to provide technical expertise and perform work activities to identify, evaluate and mitigate hazards and risks, protect employees, contractors, passengers, and the public Assesses occupational health and safety-related risks and provides advice and recommends techniques/strategies to improve the safety of employees/contractors and the safe management of identified/potential risks (e.g., respiratory protection). Provides advice/guidance to implement measures to mitigate risks and avoid reoccurrence of incidents/accidents. Coordinates/administers the maintenance and repair of specialty hygiene equipment such as sound level meters and dosimeters to ensure they are in good working order. Coordinates the rental of specialty equipment for hygiene surveys, including researching costs, options and making recommendation to the Manager of Occupational Health and Safety. Assists the Manager of Occupational Health and Safety in calculating the budget estimates for the unit, related to health and hygiene activities. Contributes to the procurement/sourcing of 3rd party service providers who perform health and hygiene related support services, ensuring and supporting the responsible use of resources. Influences and provides oversight/supervision of 3rd party service providers retained to perform field identification and assessment of hazards/risks, hygiene surveys, as required. Influences and supports employees and contractors in the performance of their day-to-day activities, through their role as a hygiene officer, without direct supervisory responsibility.
